Pink Lake, Salt Harvesting and Fulani Village Visit
Take a 45-minute drive to the Senegalese version of the Dead Sea: the Pink Lake. The lake gained world fame thanks to its color as well as the annual Paris-Dakar Rally. An important center of cooking salt collection, the Pink Lake (Retba) is one of the most visited places in Senegal. It owes its color to a high concentration of minerals and the presence of tiny micro-organisms. The color changes with the intensity of the sun's rays.
Later, visit a Fulani village, home to the second-largest ethnic group in Senegal.
Meet the village chief and take pictures with local families and compounds.
Go on a 4-wheel-drive ride to see salt collectors harvesting salt from the lake, loading it into small boats, bringing it to the shore, and piling it up.
