Day 01

Tirana Landmarks and Communist-Era History

Start point: Tirana, Albania
Time: 10:00
First, head to the Pedestrian Road, one of the main attractions in Tirana, well known for its coffee shops. From there, visit the National Gallery of Arts and The Cloud.
Then visit the Castle of Tirana, built by Ahmet Pasha Bargjini, one of the successors of Tirana's founder, Sulejman Pasha Bargjini (1604), in the second half of the 18th century.
Continue to Tabak's Bridge, named after the special position of Tabak's esnaf in Tirana's economic and social life during the 17th and 18th centuries, before visiting the Parliament of Albania and the Namazgah Mosque.
Go to Saint Paul Church, the first church built after the collapse of communism.
See the Pyramid, known as the Museum of "Enver Hoxha", a piece of communist-era architecture.
Along the Boulevard of Martyrs, visit the Post Block Memorial, which commemorates the victims of the communist regime in Albania, as well as the house of Enver Hoxha.
Visit Skanderbeg Square and the buildings around it, including the National Historical Museum, Et'hem Bey Mosque, the only 18th-19th century mosque built in Tirana, and the Tirana Clock Tower, built in 1822.
End your tour at Bunkart 2, the museum dedicated to communist crimes.

Tirana was founded in 1614 by the Ottoman Albanian general Sylejman Bargjini Pasha and flourished around the Old Mosque. Illyrians inhabited it, and it was most likely the core of the Illyrian Kingdom of the Taulanti, which in Classical Antiquity was centred in the hinterland of Epidamnus. Following the Illyrian Wars, Rome annexed it, and it became an integral part of the Roman Empire. The heritage of that period is still evident and represented by the Mosaics of Tirana.
After the Roman Empire split into East and West in the 4th century, its successor, the Byzantine Empire, took control over most of Albania and built the Petrelë Castle during the reign of Justinian I. The city was fairly unimportant until the 20th century, when the Congress of Lushnjë proclaimed it Albania's capital after the Albanian Declaration of Independence in 1912.
Classified as a Gamma World City, Tirana is Albania's most important economic, financial, political, and trade centre due to its significant location in the centre of the country and its modern air, maritime, rail, and road transportation. It is the seat of power of the government of Albania, with the official residences of the President and Prime Minister of Albania and the Parliament of Albania. The city was announced as the European Youth Capital for 2022.
