10-Day Mount Rwenzori Trek to Margherita Peak in Uganda

• At Entebbe Airport, you will be greeted by a tour representative. From here, you will be taken to Kampala and then to Kasese Town before continuing to the foothills of the Mountains of the Moon.

• Travel to Nyakalengija (1646 meters) early to begin your mountain ascent. The trip follows the Mubuku River and passes through the dense equatorial rainforest before reaching Nyabitaba Lodge (2650 meters). Chimpanzees and blue monkeys may be heard or seen.

• After an early breakfast, you will begin your journey through the Kurt Shafer Bridge to admire the glistening confluence of the Mubuku River. You will arrive in the afternoon and approach Nyamuleju Hut, from which you can get a good view of Mount Stanley and Mount Speke. Hike through open spots, lobelia, and heath moss forest to John Matte Hut (3415 meters) for an overnight stay.

• Depart early, passing enormous lobelias and heath trees. You climb to the Bigo Bog, which offers beautiful scenery with lobelias and gigantic groundsels.
• You will pass by Lake Bujuku, which sits gloriously between the famed mountains.
• Continue to Cooking Pot Rock Shelter, then on to your final destination for the day, Bujuku Hut, for dinner and overnight (3960 meters).

• Continue ascending toward Mount Victoria and Mount Speke at 4890 meters, leaving the valley behind and passing spectacular alpine plants such as Giant Groundsels and Lobelia. Move on through beautiful views of the Savoia and Elena glaciers, continue through the snow to the Scott Elliott Pass, and then reach Elena Hut (4560 meters) for an overnight break. Elena Hut will serve as your home base for the final ascent in the Rwenzori Mountains.

• Begin an early morning ascent to the icy Alexander mountain (5092 meters) and then to the highest peak, the famed Margherita at 5109 meters. Following that, descend immediately to the lovely Lake Kitandara for the night. Kitandara Hut is a great place to stay (4020 meters).

• A long descent begins after an early breakfast. First, climb from Lake Kitandara to Fresh Field Pass, from which you can see the neighbouring Congo. Stop for a picnic lunch before continuing to Guy Yeoman Hut (3260 meters) for dinner and overnight.

• The final stretch of the hike! Descend along the Mubuku River and rejoin the old route near the Bujuku River, then continue to Nyabitaba Hut for dinner and overnight (2650 meters).

• Today, we will descend to Nyakalengija, which will take about 2-3 hours.
• Next, we go to Kasese and check into Hotel Margherita. You can unwind and reflect on your ascent of Uganda's highest peak here.

• A final chance to marvel at the enthralling peaks of the Mountains of the Moon. You will bid your goodbyes and depart for Kampala with unforgettable recollections.
