Enjoy hiking on Medvednica, a mountain in central Croatia just north of Zagreb that marks the southern border of the historic region of Zagorje. Its highest peak is Sljeme at 1,035 m, and most of the area is protected as a nature park known for wildlife such as wild pigs, rabbits, deer, and woodpeckers. Along the way, pass the 13th-century Medvedgrad Castle, an old lead-zinc ore mine, and Queen's Well, one of the strongest springs of the Kraljevac stream.

Day 01

Medvednica Trek and Historic Landmarks

Pick up from your hotel in Zagreb.
Start the trek at Medvedgrad Castle, a medieval fortified town located on the southern slopes of Medvednica Mountain, approximately halfway between the Croatian capital of Zagreb and the mountain top of Sljeme.
Next, visit the Medvedgrad fortress, a landmark devoted to the Croatian soldiers who fought for independence.
From here, first climb to the lead-zinc ore mine, followed by a descent into the underground corridors near the St. Barbara wooden chapel.
Then, reach the ski slopes at the top of Medvednica Mountain, which is covered with dense beech, oak, chestnut, and fir trees and is certainly a favourite excursion destination for the citizens of Zagreb.
Lastly, visit Queen's Well, one of the strongest springs of the Kraljevac stream and a popular Zagreb resort since old times.

Know before you go

Make sure to bring light alpine equipment with you, including appropriate low or high boots, soft-shell clothing, a wind stopper in case of bad weather, and a water bottle.
It may rain in spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November).
Due to the heat in summer (June to August), carrying soft-shell shorts and T-shirts is enough.
For winter (December to February), do carry warm clothes with you. Gloves and a cap are a must.
In case of bad weather (heavy rain or snow), the tour will be cancelled. Instead of hiking, I could offer you Trakoscan Castle or my other Zagorje tour.
