Embark on this 16-day vacation designed for travellers interested in discovering the cultural heritage of Cameroon. Discover the Pygmy tribe inside the jungle of the Dja Forest Reserve, the Koma tribe on Mt Atlantika, the Mbororo tribe who tattoo their faces, and other communities including the Fulani. Visit the sultanate of Foumban, the Foumban craft market, and the chiefdoms and museums of Batoufam, Baham, and Bandjoun, while also exploring landscapes such as Faro National Park, Ekom Nkam Waterfalls, and Mt Manengouba.

Take a short trek and then a boat ride on the Dja River to reach the Pygmy camp.

The itinerary

Day 01

Arrival in Yaoundé

  • Meet your tour guide and check in to the Baptist Hotel in Yaoundé.

Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 02

Yaoundé to Somalomo via Ayos and Messamena

  • Drive from Yaoundé through Ayos, with lunch in Ayos.
  • Continue to Messamena and then Somalomo, at the entrance to the Dja Forest Reserve. Overnight at the guesthouse of the park service.

Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 03

Dja Forest Reserve and Pygmy Camp

  • Take a short trek and then a boat ride on the Dja River to reach the Pygmy camp.
  • Be welcomed by the villagers, and later camp in tents.

Activities with the Pygmy include singing and dancing.

Day 04

Traditional Activities in the Dja Forest Reserve

  • Spend a full day of activities with the Pygmy, including hunting and traditional fishing with the Pygmy women, who will also showcase their traditional medicines to us. Spend another night with the Pygmy.

Day 05

Somalomo to Yaoundé and Overnight Train to Ngaoundéré

  • Say goodbye to your hosts, return to Somalomo, and depart for Yaoundé.
  • Arrive in Yaoundé, then depart at 7:15 pm by train to Ngaoundéré. The train journey takes about 13-15 hours.

Day 06

Arrival in Ngaoundéré and Drive to Poli

  • Arrive in Ngaoundéré around midday, where a 4x4 vehicle will be waiting at the train station.
  • Go for lunch, then drive to Poli and check in to a small hotel, the Municipal Hotel Poli.

Day 07

Poli to Wangai and Trek to the Koma Tribe

  • Leave Poli and drive through Faro National Park, with the possibility of spotting wildlife along the way.
  • Arrive in Wangai and begin trekking Mt Atlantika to reach the Koma tribe. The trek takes about 3 hours.

Overnight in camping tents.

Day 08

Activities with the Koma Tribe

  • Spend time with the Koma tribe to learn about their way of life, with activities such as singing and dancing.

Overnight in tents.

Day 09

Koma Tribe to Marka Mbororo Camp

  • Say goodbye to your host Koma community, trek back to Wangai, continue to Poli, and then drive to the Marka Mbororo camp for an overnight stay in tents.

Spend the night with the local Mbororo tribe, who tattoo their faces.

Day 10

Lamidat Palace, Grotte du Kola, and Vina Waterfalls

  • Drive to Ngaoundéré and visit the Lamidat Palace of Ngaoundéré, Grotte du Kola, and the Vina Waterfalls.
  • Then take the night train to Yaoundé.

Day 11

Arrival in Yaoundé and Rest

  • Arrive in Yaoundé in the afternoon, check in to the hotel, and relax.

Day 12

Yaoundé to Batoufam, Foumban, and Koutaba

  • Depart by hired car from Yaoundé to Bafoussam.
  • On the way, stop at the beautiful and very large chief's palace of the Batoufam community, then continue to Bafoussam and Foumban.
  • Visit the palace of the Foumban sultanate, a beautiful museum, and a craft market. Then drive to Koutaba and check in to Hotel Paradise.

Day 13

Bandjoun, Baham, Dschang Museum, and Ekom Nkam Waterfalls

  • After breakfast, drive to Bandjoun chiefdom to visit its palace and museum, then continue to Baham chiefdom to visit its museum and palace.
  • Head to the city of Dschang and visit the Civilization Museum, which presents the cultural history of Cameroon in both the post-colonial and pre-colonial periods.
  • Proceed to Melong and visit Ekom Nkam Waterfalls, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the country. Then drive to Mbouroukou village at the foot of Mt Manengouba and check in to the beautiful Muka Park Resort.

Day 14

Mt Manengouba Twin Lakes and Mbororo Mountain Camp

  • After breakfast at the hotel, hike for approximately 3 hours to visit the twin lakes of Mt Manengouba.
  • Later, descend to the campement Mbororo, a cattle-grazing village located high in the mountain savanna. Camp in tents with a Mbororo family.
  • Learn about their way of life and enjoy the beautiful scenery with many cattle. There will also be a barbecue at night.

Day 15

Melong to Douala

  • Say goodbye to your hosts, descend back to Melong, and drive to Douala. On the way, pass through many pineapple, papaya, banana, palm, and rubber plantations.
  • Arrive in Douala and check in to the hotel.

Day 16

Departure from Cameroon

  • Drop off at the airport and depart from Cameroon.
