The Apoyo Crater was formed approximately 25,000 years ago after a very powerful volcanic explosion that left a hole about six kilometres in diameter. Over time, the influx of groundwater and rainfall allowed the lagoon to emerge, while the slopes became covered with abundant vegetation.
