Materuni Village Hike and Waterfall Experience
This very impressive waterfall is one of the tallest in the area, spewing crystal-clear glacier water 70 m into its basin. The beautiful path leading to Materuni Waterfall lies at 2500 m above sea level and crosses valleys and hills covered by tropical rainforest, passing coffee, banana, and avocado "shambas," the Kiswahili word for farms.
On a clear day, great views of Kibo and Moshi Town can be seen. The hike to the base of the waterfall can be demanding, and hiking boots are recommended.
Activities at Materuni Village and Waterfalls include passing through coffee and banana plantations, with a chance of meeting a variety of primates, including Black and white Colobus monkeys. You will also get an explanation about the local people, daily life, and traditions of the Chagga people, while enjoying the nature of the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro and learning about different flowers.
You will visit the waterfalls, receive an explanation, and enjoy swimming if you like. The hike also goes up to the boundary of Mount Kilimanjaro National Park at 2400 m. In addition, you will learn how to make local coffee and drink your own coffee, and, if the clouds allow, enjoy one of the best viewpoints for the snow peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro.
