Day by day

The itinerary

1
Day 01

Train to the Trailhead and Trek to Aguas Calientes

  • Pick up from your hotel at 5:30 am in a private taxi and head to the train station in Ollantaytambo to board the 7:45 am train.
  • Travel by train for 1 hour and 30 minutes until you reach the start of the trail.
  • Begin the hike and continue for approximately 4 hours to the Inca site of Wiñay Wayna ("Forever Young") at 2650 m.
  • After exploring the Inca site, continue for about 1 hour to Inti Punku ("Sun Gate") at 2720 m, where you will see your first panoramic view of Machu Picchu at 2400 m.
  • Take a 1-hour downhill walk to reach Machu Picchu.
  • Then go down to Aguas Calientes to spend the night and have dinner.
  • After finishing the trail, visit the thermal springs in the town.

Day 02

Sunrise at Machu Picchu and Return to Cusco

  • Have breakfast at the hotel, then take the first bus between 5:30 am and 6:00 am up to Machu Picchu to see the sunrise.
  • Optional - climb Wayna Picchu (2720 m) in the first group at 7:00 am. It takes between 45 minutes and 1 hour to reach the top of the mountain.
  • After enjoying the beautiful views from the top, go down to Machu Picchu to explore the mysterious Inca city with your guide.
  • Meet the guide in Aguas Calientes for lunch and receive the train tickets back to Cusco. The train usually leaves at 16:43 from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo.
  • From there, return to your hotel in Cusco.

  • Transportation: private taxi to the train station, train tickets to km 104, bus tickets from Machu Picchu to Aguas Calientes on the first day, round-trip bus tickets from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu on the second day, train tickets back to Ollantaytambo, and transfer from the train station to the hotel.

  • Entrance tickets to the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu.

  • Professional bilingual guide (English and Spanish).

  • Meals: box lunch on the first day.

  • Wayna Picchu ticket. If you would like to climb Wayna Picchu, please tell us which group you prefer (7:00 or 10:00) in the remarks field while booking. The additional cost is USD 70 and must be paid at the briefing.

  • Please note that no porters are provided for this trek, as one-day permits for Inca Trail porters are not available. Everything you need for the two days must be carried by yourself.

  • Meals: dinner on the first day and lunch on the second day.

What to bring

You can pay 50% as a deposit, and the balance must be paid in Cusco in cash when you arrive and before you start the tour.

This deposit is only 30% refundable if you cancel the tour 30 days before the start of the tour.

The remaining 20% of the deposit is non-refundable because, as soon as you make the deposit, Machu Picchu tickets and train tickets are purchased, and those tickets cannot be changed for the date or the person who will use them.

Know before you go

  • Cusco - price to pay before trekking starts: USD 200.00 per person.

  • Level of difficulty: very low.

  • Required fitness level: very low.

  • Everyone doing the trek must arrive in Cusco at least two days before the start of the trek in order to acclimatize to the altitude.
