Day 01

Iquitos to the Lodge via Nauta and the Amazon

  • From Iquitos, pick-up is available at any hotel in the city. Pick-up at Iquitos Airport can also be arranged with prior coordination with the client.
  • To reach Curuhuinsi Lodge, located three hours from Iquitos, we will first travel overland to Nauta and then board a typical local boat that will take us directly to the lodge.
  • Before arriving at the lodge, we will make a brief stop where the three most important rivers of Peru meet: the Amazon River, the Marañón River, and the Ucayali River. Here, we can look for the pink dolphins, which are mainly found in the Amazon River, so we will have many chances to see them.
  • Upon arrival at the lodge, we will have lunch. Later, enjoy a canoe ride along the river and around the lakes to become familiar with the jungle and the area where the lodge is located, while searching for birds, monkeys, sloths, and other wildlife.
  • We will then visit a native community, where we will have the opportunity to learn about and observe their way of life on the banks of the Amazon River. We will see their homes, types of construction, schools, and churches, and interact with the inhabitants while learning about their farming and fishing techniques. We will observe their customs and traditions and gain an understanding of their natural and austere lifestyle. People in the jungle are very cheerful and welcoming, and they enjoy sharing their culture with foreigners, especially children, who love playing sports. Many families make crafts and sell them, so here we will also have the opportunity to buy typical handicrafts from the Peruvian Amazon.
  • Then, we will meet Pablito, the lazy bear. Pablito grew up with the community from a very young age, and since then he has never wanted to leave. Sometimes he gets lost in the jungle for a few days, but he always returns to the community. He is very affectionate with people, so we can carry him and play with him.
  • Finally, enjoy the sunset in the jungle from our boat.
  • We will continue deeper into the jungle to observe alligators. Our guide will take us to remote places to find these wild animals. At nightfall, if the sky is clear, we can appreciate the splendid brightness of the moon, as well as the stars and constellations, and with luck, we may even see a shooting star.
  • We will return to the lodge for dinner and rest.

Day 02

Primary Forest Walk, Medicinal Plants, and Pink Dolphins

  • Walk through the primary forest to learn about medicinal plants. During our tour, we will learn to identify the diverse flora and fauna, including different species of monkeys and giant trees such as the Lupuna (Ceiba tree).
  • We will learn about the medicinal plants that local people use to cure illnesses, including traditional aphrodisiac drinks made from the bark and roots of trees.
  • Then, our guide will give us an experiential class on how to survive in the jungle and how to use what nature itself provides for our benefit, just as a local person would do. We will also look for Tarzan vines and have fun simulating his movements.
  • Finally, we will take advantage of the walk to collect some typical foods of the jungle, such as chonta and mushrooms, which we will eat for lunch.
  • After lunch, relax for a while in the hammocks. After this break, you will go out to see and swim in the Amazon River with the river dolphins. We will travel by boat to the Amazon River, where we can bathe and enjoy its fresh water. It is very likely that the pink dolphins will be present very close to us; however, we must keep our distance and not touch them, since they are wild animals. We must let them come close to us, not the other way around.
  • Then, we will make a brief stop on the banks of a tributary river for a mud treatment. We will wallow in the mud to absorb the nutrients and minerals it contains. We will also enjoy other healing benefits, such as relieving stress and anxiety, relaxing the muscles, hydrating the skin, and eliminating toxins.
  • Finally, we will end the day by watching the beautiful sunset of the Peruvian Amazon from our boat.
  • At night, we will take our flashlights and walk through the jungle in search of anacondas, tarantulas, scorpions, snakes, and giant frogs. We will witness the enchanting transformation of the jungle into a dark environment, where nature takes on a different character and nocturnal creatures come to the fore. We will be able to observe a completely different range of fauna from what is usually found during the day, while listening to the magical sounds of insects, birds, felines, and owls.
  • We will return to the lodge for dinner.

Day 03

Full-Day Jungle Adventure and Survival Program

  • We will wake up early for breakfast and prepare for a full day's adventure, sailing along small lakes and rivers of the Amazon jungle until we reach a lake where we will stay until the afternoon, taking part in many activities such as fishing and hiking.
  • We will have lunch in the middle of the jungle as a picnic, and then return to the lodge. On the way, we will look for other species of monkeys, macaws, toucans, and the famous Victoria Regia, the Amazon orchid. We may be able to appreciate its white flowers on their first day of flowering, before they turn pink on the second day. This imposing plant of lakes and swamps can grow up to 3 meters in diameter and is known for its immense circular leaf, a symbol of strength and magnitude.
  • Dinner and rest.

Day 04

Camping, Piranha Fishing, and Night Canoe Search

  • We will get up early for breakfast and prepare for an adventure in the middle of the jungle. We will navigate along small lakes and rivers of the Amazon jungle until we reach a lake, where we will stay to camp while doing many activities such as fishing and hiking. If we have time, we may even learn the technique of spearfishing on the banks of the river.
  • For piranha fishing, we will prepare to fish in the dark tributary rivers of the Amazon. If we are successful, we can eat the fearsome piranhas we catch for lunch.
  • Then, we will take a second walk through the jungle to make sure we have seen the variety of flora and fauna and to ensure that we have learned the most important survival techniques. Here, you will have the opportunity to ask the guide any questions that you have not been able to ask before.
  • At night, we will go out by canoe to look for boas constrictors and anacondas in the branches of the trees.

Day 05

Sunrise Birdwatching and Manta Ray Fishing

  • For birdwatching, we will get up early to appreciate the sunrise in the Amazon jungle and observe different species of birds, including macaws, toucans, shansho, and camungo. The view is wonderful, and all the birds gather in search of food.
  • Then, we will prepare for manta ray fishing and move to one of the tributaries of the Amazon River, where we will learn about various fishing techniques. Our first experience will be fishing for manta rays in the river. Those who dare can ask for them to be prepared for lunch, as local people enjoy them very much.
  • During our last lunch in the jungle, before going home, the guides will give us a brief talk about the risks that exist today in the Peruvian jungle, such as contamination of the Amazon River, and how we can help reduce these risks.
  • We will also talk about endangered animals and the various associations that carry out research in the jungle in order to preserve the Peruvian environment, flora, and fauna.
  • Arrival in Iquitos, or at the airport if you have a flight that night.
