Hyderabad Heritage Walk through Char Kaman and Charminar

  • You will be picked up from your hotel in the morning or afternoon to begin the program.
  • Drive to the Madina Building and step down at Badshahi Ashurkhana. This is one of the oldest and most spectacular Ashurkhanas in the world. It is a place of mourning for Shia Muslims, constructed in memory of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein. It was built by Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah, the founder of Hyderabad, in 1593, and features high-quality colourful mosaics from Persia.
  • Then, learn about N'aal, an Arabic word meaning a metallic piece that covers the nose and forehead of a soldier. It is attached to the Khud, or armour cap. The Naal of Hazrat Imam Hussain was broken during the Battle of Karbala. After passing through several hands, it came to Bijapur during the reign of Yusuf Adil Shah and was later sent from Bijapur to Golconda, along with the Asnads (certificates), to Ibrahim Qutub Shah. Before the city of Hyderabad came into existence, the Naal was kept in the shape of the Arabic Allah as part of an Alam, covered with sandal paste, and installed in Golconda. As mentioned in the Gulzar-e-Asafia, after the construction of Hyderabad, the Naal Mubarak was shifted to a portion of the Royal Palace known as Ilahi Mahal near Char Kaman. This is the current location where the Alam is installed every year.
  • Next, proceed to Mir Alam Mandi, one of the largest vegetable markets in the old city of Hyderabad, where you can see dry fish shops, meat shops, snack shops, spice shops, pickle shops, pan shops, and more. You can also enter one of the old Irani Gallis, where you can see Alam makers and have a chance to chat with them.
  • Further, continue to Char Bagh, or Char Suka ka Houz. This is the place where you can see the proper city plan of Hyderabad. We will stand in the centre of the city at Gulzar House to explore the Iran grid plan of Hyderabad city. Char Kaman, literally meaning "four gates," consists of four historical structures in Hyderabad, India, located near Charminar.
  • Afterwards, head to Charminar, literally "four minarets," constructed in 1591. This monument in Hyderabad has become globally known as a symbol of the city and is listed among the most recognised structures in India. It has also been officially incorporated as the emblem of Telangana. Charminar's long history includes the existence of a mosque on its top floor for more than 425 years. While both historically and religiously significant, it is also known for the popular and busy local markets surrounding the structure, making it one of the most frequented tourist attractions in Hyderabad.
