Full-Day Nazaré Tour with Black Madonna and Sacred Heritage

1 Day Round trip from 2450 Nazaré Easy pace

The journey

Trip highlights
  • 01 Listen to the historian's explanation of the Black Madonna, the oldest Christian artefact
  • 02 Explore all three areas of Nazaré - Pederneira, Sítio, and Praia
  • 03 Observe the life of fishermen at the fishing port, shipbuilding area, and beach
  • 04 Spot deer and falcons in Nazaré's magical forest

History is energy - energy that seeps through the sandy threads of time from yesterday to today, forming what we call "tomorrow". Without feeling that energy, it is impossible to know the story, no matter how hard a person tries. Nazaré is not just about the biggest waves or the most beautiful wild beaches in Europe; this place is made up of hundreds of fragments, shining, bright, and tender. Uncommon!

Know before you go

  • Photos of fishermen whose lives were taken by the ocean. Widows left with their memories, dressed in dresses darker than night. A majestic rock on which layers of millions of years have been imprinted, and sacred sand sparkling in its purity under the scorching rays of the sun's disk; fishing boats slowly leaving for the night and flocks of birds circling greedily over the heads of sailors soaked by torrential rain; the sound of wind in a pine forest; an abandoned church (the oldest in all Portugal), resting alone in the darkness, around which a grey-haired shepherd walks with a herd of black goats. The smell of cheap washing powder, native and pleasant - the aroma of childhood and a mother's care.
  • The snow-white walls of the little houses and the linen hung in perfect order here and there. And also, there is a yellow fog coming from nowhere, the wind in February that is about to tear off the roofs of houses in Sítio, and the amazingly warm and sunny days of summer. People who are delightfully beautiful, with light shining from their hearts; a waitress in a "grandmother's cafe" with eyes coloured like Portuguese autumn; the swollen veins of an old man, full of blood and stories, carrying home a basket of fresh fish, smiling. He smiles to you, to others, to himself, to the skies. And, of course, a magical forest with deer and falcons in it. This is Nazaré. And only after all of this do the world's largest waves, surf, and handmade fur slippers come.
