Sibiu

Sibiu is a charming city known by its German name, "Hermannstadt", that reflects its rich history and cultural diversity. The city was founded by German settlers in the 12th century and has been shaped by its German, Hungarian, and Romanian heritage over the centuries. Sibiu is famous for its stunning architecture, which reflects its different cultural influences. You can find Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Art Nouveau styles all around the city. The historical center of Sibiu is home to many impressive landmarks, such as the Brukenthal Palace, the Council Tower, the Lutheran Cathedral, and the Large and Small Squares.

Sibiu is also a cultural hub, having been designated the European Capital of Culture in 2007, and the European Region of Gastronomy in 2019, highlighting the city's rich culinary traditions and local cuisine.

Brasov

Brasov, or”Kronstadt" was founded by the Knights of the Teutonic Order in the 13th century. One of the most impressive landmarks in Brasov is the Black Church, a Gothic-style church that dates back to the 14th century. The church was named after the damage it suffered during a great fire in the 17th century, which blackened its walls. Nowadays, it is one of the most iconic buildings in Brasov, with its impressive bell tower and beautiful stained glass windows.

Brasov's rich heritage, history, and architecture make it one of the jewels of Transylvania. Its historic center is a mix of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles, with colorful houses, cobblestone streets, and cozy cafes. The city is also surrounded by stunning natural landscapes, with the Carpathian Mountains visible from many points in the city.

Bran Castle, also known as "Dracula's Castle" was also built by the Teutonic Knights in the 14th century. This was a defense fortress against Ottoman invasions. Over the years, it served various purposes, from a customs point to a royal residence. The castle's connection to Bram Stoker's novel "Dracula" is not based on historical fact but rather on its resemblance to the fictional castle described in the book. However, the castle is associated with the historical figure of Vlad the Impaler, who is said to have used it as a temporary residence during his campaigns against the Ottomans in the 15th century. Vlad is often identified with the legendary figure of Dracula due to his cruelty and reputation for impaling his enemies.

Sighisoara

An important highlight of Romania is Sighișoara, the only inhabited medieval fortress included in UNESCO's World Heritage Sites. This is the place where you can find out more about Dracula’s legends, and about the life of the real life ruler, Vlad the Impaler (Vlad Tepes). Walking up the winding cobblestone streets lined with historic buildings, you reach the Clock Tower, a symbol of the city, from where you can admire the breathtaking views. The Tower shelters a museum of medieval weapons and a torture chamber. After visiting the tower you will climb the three hundred wooden steps up to the Church-on-the-Hill, built in the XIV century.
