Day 01
Laguna Paron Excursion from Huaraz
- Drive north to the town of Caraz, then continue up the dirt road to the Refugio near Lake Paron. This route is impressive for the high and very steep, often vertical slopes of this narrow U-shaped valley.
- Through a long series of hairpin bends, climb to the Refugio while enjoying clear and sometimes rather frightening views of the rock faces. The river valley floor is irregular, with sections that are very steep and narrow, as well as wider and gentler stretches passing through different types of vegetation, including many ferns, bromeliads, orchids, and the Polylepis forest (quenual trees) at higher altitude.
- Upon arriving at the Refugio, begin hiking along the footpath on the northern slope, following the lake up to its head.
- Take pictures, enjoy the landscapes around you, and have your tasty box lunch.
- Finally, return to the Refugio, where our private transport will be waiting to drive you back to your hotel in Huaraz.
Timing: about 10-11 hours for this full-day adventure journey.
Duration: 7 hours by car round trip and 2 to 3 hours at the lake.
