The itinerary

Day 01

Banjul to Dakar and Dakar City Tour

  • Your guide will pick you up from your hotel at 6:00 am to start the tour.
  • Drive to Banjul to join the ferry across to the north bank.
  • Upon arrival at Barra, continue to the Gambian-Senegalese border for passport control, then drive on to Dakar, passing through many rural villages and towns.
  • There will be a few stops for drinks and checks at Senegalese customs and police points.
  • After a 6 to 7-hour drive, arrive in Dakar and check into the hotel.
  • Later, have lunch and rest before setting out for a city tour of Dakar.
  • Visit the African Renaissance Monument, Independence Square, the Mosque of Divinity, the Cathedral Church, and the Museum of African Civilisation.
  • Next, continue to Soumbedioune Craft Market and Kermel local market.

Day 02

Gorée Island Heritage Tour and Pink Lake Safari

  • After breakfast, drive to the port to join the ferry across to Gorée Island.
  • Upon arrival, enjoy a guided tour of the slave statues, the House of Slaves, now a museum, the 19th-century Fort d'Estrees, and the IFAN Historical Museum, which exhibits Senegal's past.
  • Then, head to the Henriette-Bathily Women's Museum, which considers the role of women in West African society, on an island with a population estimated at 1,680 people in 2013.
  • Next, continue exploring Gorée Island, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978 for several of its historical structures, which were restored in 1980 and 1990.
  • After this short tour of the island, have lunch and later join the ferry back to Dakar to continue to Pink Lake.
  • On arrival at Pink Lake, join a 4-wheeler safari to explore the sand dunes and salt processing centres, and learn how locals collect and process salt for their daily livelihoods. It is estimated that as many as 1,000 people work around the lake each day, harvesting 24,000 tons of salt every year, with over 70% exported to West Africa, especially Ivory Coast.
  • Reach your hotel at 7:00 pm and have dinner.

Touring Dakar without visiting Pink Lake is like going to Rome and not seeing the Pope.

Day 03

Return from Dakar to Banjul

  • Wake up early at 6:00 am and get ready for breakfast.
  • After breakfast, depart for the final journey back to The Gambia, which requires a 6 to 7-hour drive.
  • Arrive at the Gambian-Senegalese border for passport control again, then head to Barra to join the ferry across to Banjul.
  • Arrive back at your hotel at approximately 5:00 pm to end the tour.
