The itinerary

Day 01

Nouakchott to Atar via Akjoujt and Azougi

  • Travel from Nouakchott to Atar, a journey of about 5 h 29 min (438.9 km).
  • Then, stop for tea in Akjoujt after 3 h 25 min (259.7 km).
  • When we arrive in Atar, we will visit the city centre and the main market.
  • Afterwards, proceed to the main mosque in Atar.
  • Later, head to Azougi, which was an essential stop on the trans-Saharan trade.

Overnight in a hotel in Atar.

Day 02

Ouadane and the Richat Structure

  • Travel to Ouadane (3 h 7 min; 180.1 km).
  • Take a short stop at the rock paintings of Amogjar.
  • In Ouadane, we will discover the Richat structure.
  • Then, have lunch and move to the old mosque and houses.

Overnight in Ouadane.

Day 03

Chinguetti's Old Mosque, Libraries and Dunes

  • Head to Chinguetti, which takes about 3 to 4 hours of desert driving.
  • Have lunch at the hotel in Chinguetti.
  • Discover the beauty of the city by visiting the old mosque and libraries.
  • Enjoy the sunset on the dunes near the city.

Overnight at the hotel.

Day 04

Chinguetti to Nouakchott via Mherith and Terjit

  • Travel back to Nouakchott.
  • Stop at Mherith oasis of palm trees.
  • Have lunch in Terjit oasis.
  • Finally, we will arrive in Nouakchott.
