Day 01

Hraundrangi Alpine Climb from Akureyri

  • Start the day in Akureyri and drive to the base of the mountain; the drive takes about 40 minutes. Hraundrangi is one of the most iconic mountains in Iceland, located in Öxnadalur about 40 minutes south-west of Akureyri.
  • When ready, begin the approach to the climb, which can take 2-3 hours. This is your chance to climb one of the most stunning peaks in Iceland. Hraundrangi is a lava column that rises 1075 meters above sea level. The peak was first climbed in 1956; until then, it was considered unclimbable.
  • Once you get to the base, your guide will go over how the gear works and explain how the climb will proceed. The climb is 80 meters and is done in two pitches. The summit is narrow and it is difficult to have more than one person on top at a time.
  • Finally, abseil back down the same route.

  • Climbing this peak takes around 7-9 hours, so we recommend that participants are in good shape and are not scared of heights.
  • For those staying in Reykjavík: Hraundrangi is a 5-hour drive from Reykjavík, so we recommend staying the night before and after the climb in Akureyri. Akureyri is the capital of North Iceland and is located on a beautiful hill in the valley of Eyjafjörður.
