Day 01

Devils Town, Prolom Spa, and Lazarica Church

  • Departure from Niš towards the west, on the road leading to Priština.
  • Pass by Merošina - the cherry town, Prokuplje - the town of sweets and chocolate, and Kuršumlija.
  • Arrive at Devils Town, a unique natural monument that will fully capture your attention and senses. Visit the entire site: Hell's Ditch, Devil's Ditch, Red Spring - a spring of highly mineralized iron-rich water, Sass's mines from the 13th century, and the Church of St. Petka.
  • Enjoy free time for photos, souvenirs, and a short break.
  • Continue towards Prolom Spa.
  • Arrive at this spot on the slopes of Mount Sokolovica (600 m above sea level).
  • Visit Lazarica Church on foot, built in 1890 and the only wooden church in this part of Serbia. According to legend, part of King Lazar's army received the sacrament here just before the historic Battle of Kosovo. A unique rarity of this church is the six curved plum trees standing in the front yard.
  • Lunch break at the Etno restaurant. Located along the Prolom River, beside the hiking tracks, the restaurant features a superb collection of old Serbian houses and domestic items, along with excellent food such as traditionally prepared beef and lamb, "rednica" pie, cabbage, beans, homemade bread, cheese, and cookies.
  • Short break for individual activities.
  • Afternoon departure from the spa towards the city of Niš.

Day 02

Poganovo, Sukovo, Pirot, Sićevo Gorge, and Niš Spa

  • Depart from Niš to the east on the international road E80 (Niš - Sofia - Istanbul), via Bela Palanka and Pirot, to the Monastery of St. Jovan Bogoslov in the village of Poganovo. This monastery is one of the oldest and, at the same time, one of the most beautiful in this part of Serbia. It stands in a beautiful setting where the Jerma River spreads along its banks, surrounded by mountain slopes and the edges of the gorge. It was built in the late 14th century, while the frescoes were painted a century later.
  • Short coffee break at the nearby restaurant, a former train station of the now-closed coal mine railway.
  • Continue towards the monastery dedicated to the Rising of the Holy Mother of God in the village of Sukovo, dating from the 17th century.
  • Drive toward Pirot.
  • Arrive in Pirot and visit the Etno Museum of the Nišava River valley. The museum's main building was often used as a sound stage for movie shoots. Also make a shorter stop at Pirot Fortress, "Pirotsko kale".
  • Continue west along the Nišava River valley. Enjoy panoramic views at one of the most beautiful gorges in southeast Europe, an immense natural heritage site protected by law, as well as the third-oldest hydropower plant in Serbia and the wineries of the village of Sićevo.
  • Arrive at Niš Spa.
  • Take a walking tour of the King's Villa and the central spa park, and visit the spa's most significant spring (36°C/96.8°F), the large terrace of Hotel Radon, and the "spa's slopes." Listen to stories about the spa's villas, tramps, and the Orient Express train.
  • Return to the city.
