Old Harbor, Historic Churches and City Highlights

  • Meet your tour guide and visit the old piers, used for centuries by fishermen and sea travellers. Today, they offer a welcoming sight of sailboats and yachts from around the world.
  • Next, explore:
    • St. James' Church: Built in the 12th century and repaired many times after fires and wars, its massive stone walls have witnessed thousands of parishioners and pilgrims on their way to the shrine of Saint James, two walking days away.
    • St. Mary's Church: The most important church in the Old City for protecting fishers and sea travellers. It stands on the highest ground and would have been visible from anywhere in town and from the sea.
    • Mar Pita Square: A Coru's main square is presided over by the City Hall, and its name honours the memory of the local heroine who fought and repelled Francis Drake's assault in 1589.
    • Mndez Nz Gardens: Botanical gardens with beautiful kiosks and halls dating from the early 20th century.
    • Praza de Lugo: This present-day shopping district was still under construction when Pablo Picasso moved here as a child in 1891.
