Tumbatu Island Culture, Fishing Traditions, and Shiraz Ruins
- Meet your tour guide at your hotel in Zanzibar or at the specified meeting point, then start at 9:00 am from Mkokoni local dhow harbour and fishing village.
- Enjoy a short visit around the area before heading to Tumbatu Island. You will visit the local fish and furniture market, as well as the local cargo dhows and fishing boats. The journey to the island takes about 30 minutes by small boat.
- Stop at the lagoon to learn about the fishing methods used by locals and see their fishing traps.
- Visit different areas of the island to experience the locals' daily life, from the harbour, where you will meet dhow crafters and fishermen repairing their nets, to the old baobab trees that once served as a school classroom.
- Then proceed to an interesting part of the tour by visiting a witch doctor (spiritual healer) and learning about traditional spiritual and ritual treatments and herbs.
- See the Shiraz ruins. The Shiraz were the earliest settlers and local rulers of the Zanzibar Islands and Tumbatu Island before the 12th century.
- Enjoy a hot local lunch served at the end of the tour, with rice, coconut curry, seafood, and fruits.
- At the end of the tour, you will be dropped back at your hotel.
