Day 01

Olpopongi Maasai Cultural Village Experience

• Meet your tour guide, who will pick you up at 7:30 a.m. after breakfast at your hotel, and prepare for an adventure to Olpopongi Maasai Cultural Village.
• Follow the main road to Boma Ng'ombe, then turn right onto Sanya Juu Road before branching off onto a rough road to the left.
• Meet the Maasai guide along the way, who will take you on a walk through Maasai territory while your driver continues to the village. Depending on your preference, the walk can be long or short. The longer walk may cover up to 12 km, during which you will learn about Maasai traditional medicines.
• Spot animals such as giraffes and Thomson's gazelles during your walk. After the long walk, arrive at the village and receive a warm welcome with Maasai dances and songs. Lunch will be served after the welcoming formalities.
• Later, visit the local museum, where you will have the chance to learn about Maasai origins, traditions, and day-to-day life in the wilderness. You will also visit a typical Maasai hut and see how they spend their nights. Do not hesitate to ask as many questions as possible and exchange pleasantries with the residents.
• Listen to a farewell song by the villagers and join in the dancing if you wish.
• Start your journey back to Moshi or Arusha for an overnight stay.

Know before you go

• Olpopongi Maasai Cultural Village is home to the Maasai tribe. The village is located just 75 km from Moshi and is easily accessible. During your visit, you will learn how a typical Maasai survives in the wilderness, how they care for their animals, and gain in-depth knowledge of their traditional medicines. The Maasai are a Nilotic ethnic group who inhabit Northern Tanzania. They are highly known for their unique culture and their ability to live near national parks. The Maasai speak the Maa language, a Nilotic language related to Dinka, Kalenjin, and Nuer. Most Maasai have also adopted Tanzania's official national language, Swahili, except for some elders in the villages.
• A typical Maasai lifestyle centres on livestock, which is their primary source of food. Their wealth is also measured by the number of cattle they own. The wealthier a man is, the more wives he can marry and the more children he can have, which is considered a symbol of respect in the village.
• As their societies grew, the Maasai realised that cattle alone were not enough for their daily basic needs, so they began practising farming as an additional activity, while animal keeping remained their dominant livelihood. The Maasai are also recognised by their distinctive attire, which varies according to age and gender. Maasai beadwork is especially popular for its intricacy, and the women's beadwork expresses their position in society.
• Olpopongi Maasai Cultural Village can be visited throughout the year, and there may even be a chance to spot wildlife during the walking tour guided by a Maasai warrior guide. From December to April, the area receives rainfall, and animals are easier to spot. Wildlife that may be seen includes zebras, Thomson's gazelle, dik-dik, elephants, and giraffes. From May to August, the area is usually windy and dry, and spotting animals can be more difficult.
