Bike Through the Ancient Ruins of Carthage

  • Arrive at Rue Mathos, the bike tour's starting point.
  • Halt for 10 minutes at Tophet de Carthage, also called Tophet Salammbo, an ancient sacred area dedicated to the Phoenician gods Tanit and Baal. The Tophet contains many graves of children who, according to interpretations, were either killed or buried there after their untimely death.
  • Visit the North Africa American Cemetery and Memorial, a Second World War military cemetery in Carthage dedicated to martyred war heroes.
  • Continue biking towards the Carthage Aqueduct, also known as the Zaghouan Aqueduct, an ancient Roman aqueduct that supplied water to Carthage, Tunisia. From its source in Zaghouan, it runs for 132 km, making it one of the longest aqueducts in the Roman Empire.
  • Travel to Villas Romaines, a Roman villa that was typically used as a country house by wealthy Romans.
  • Check out Saint Louis Cathedral, a Roman Catholic church located on the peak of Byrsa Hill, near the ruins of the ancient Punic and later Roman cities. It was built atop the ruins of an old temple dedicated to Eshmun, the Punic god of healing.
  • Ride to the Baths of Antoninus, also called the Baths of Carthage, the largest Roman thermae built on the African continent and one of the three largest in the Roman Empire. These baths are also the only remaining Thermae of Carthage dating back to the Roman Empire era.
  • Return to Rue Mathos, which marks the end of the tour.
