The itinerary

Day 01

El Djem, Matmata, and Chott El Jerid to Tozeur

Early pick-up from hotels for a drive to El Djem to visit one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world.
Continue to Matmata, passing through a sea of olive trees near the city of Sfax to Gabes, a large maritime oasis, before reaching the lunar landscapes of southern Tunisia.
Arrive in Matmata, where parts of the Star Wars films were made. After lunch, continue over the steppes, where Bedouins still live as nomads in their half-open tents with their flocks of goats and camels, to visit a troglodyte cave dwelling and a Berber family.
Drive to the oasis town of Tozeur, crossing the Chott El Jerid salt lake.

Dinner and overnight at the 4-star Ras el Ain (or similar).

Day 02

Tozeur Oasis with Chebika and Tamerza or Onc el Jemel

Visit the town and oasis of Tozeur, with an optional horse carriage ride.

Option 1 (Tuesday departures only):

Continue up the Atlas Mountains in 4x4 vehicles to visit the mountain oases of Chebika and Tamerza.

Option 2 (Friday departures only):

Travel into the desert by 4x4 vehicles to Onc el Jemel (also known as Ong Jemel and Oung Jemel) to visit the desert film set featured in the Star Wars films as Mos Espa.
