The itinerary

Day 01

Arrival and Acclimatization in Lhasa

  • Arrive at Lhasa Airport, where you will be picked up and transferred to your hotel for check-in.
  • Spend the afternoon acclimatizing to the altitude and taking some rest.

Day 02

Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and Bakhor Street

  • After breakfast at the hotel, visit the Potala Palace. Located in the centre of Lhasa city, the palace was built by the Tibetan king Songtsan Gampo and his Chinese queen in the 7th century. The white section was used as an office, while the red section honours the stupas of each generation of Dalai Lamas.
  • Explore Jokhang Temple and Bakhor Street.
  • Walk along the Kora road to sightsee Bakhor Street and a Tibetan traditional market.

Day 03

Drepung Monastery and Norbulinka

  • Have breakfast at the hotel and visit Drepung Monastery, located at the foot of Mount Gephel in the western part of Lhasa city.
  • Explore the Ganden Podang in Drepung, which was the residence of the Dalai Lamas until the Great Fifth Dalai Lama constructed the Potala.

Day 04

From Lhasa to Shigatse via Yamdrok Tso and Gyantse

  • After breakfast at the hotel, depart from Lhasa for Shigatse.
  • En route, cross the Gangbala Pass (4,790 m).
  • At the top of the pass, appreciate the turquoise lake, then continue towards Gyantse.
  • View the Karo-La Glacier and reach Gyantse.
  • Visit Pelkor Choden Monastery and then drive to Shigatse (2 hours).

Day 05

Tashilunpo Monastery in Shigatse

  • After breakfast at the hotel, visit Tashilunpo Monastery, located on the southern slope of Nyimar Hill in the west of Shigatse town. It was founded in 1447 by the first Dalai Lama, Dendun Drupa, the 8th disciple of Tsongkapa. It is known as one of the six major monasteries of the Gelukpa sect and the largest monastery in the Tsang area.

Departure from Lhasa

  • Have breakfast at the hotel and drive to Lhasa Airport to catch your flight.
