The itinerary

1
Day 01

Mekele to Abala and Erta Ale Base Camp

  • Drive from Mekele to Abala town. As we go down, enjoy the landscape of the Rift Valley and take a coffee break.
  • Continue driving toward the volcano. Lunch will be in the town of Iribti.
  • Arrive at the base camp to make final preparations and have dinner.
  • After arriving at the volcano, begin a one-and-a-half-hour trek.
  • Enjoy the magma fire and spend the night 200 meters away from the crater.
  • In the morning, walk back to the base camp for breakfast.

Day 02

Erta Ale to Afdera and Abala

  • Drive to Afdera town, which is situated 104 meters below sea level, and experience the heat.
  • Afdera town is also known for the country's massive salt production.
  • Swim in the salt lake of Afdera and refresh yourself in the natural hot spring beside the lake.
  • Have lunch in one of the local hotels.
  • Drive to Abala town and spend the night in a shared guest house if it is a group tour.

Day 03

Abala to Berhale, Hammedela, and Dallol

  • Visit the market of Abala town in the morning if it is a market day.
  • Drive to Berhale town. On the way, enjoy the landscape and some of the small villages.
  • Have lunch in Berhale town.
  • After lunch, drive to Hammedela town, where the campsite is found 7 kilometres away from the salt flat.
  • Drive to the salt plain of Dallol, situated 121 meters below sea level, the lowest place in Africa.
  • There will be a sunset program near the salt lake called Asale.

Day 04

Dallol Exploration and Return to Mekele

  • Drive to the colourful place of Dallol and visit this extraordinary place.
  • Visit the salt mountain and the yellow pond, the mineral spring.
  • Visit the traditional salt mining area and see the caravan camels.
  • Drive back to the town of Berhale for lunch.
  • After lunch, drive back to Mekele.

End of program.
