6-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Rongai Route Trek to Uhuru Peak

6 Days Round trip from Mt Kilimanjaro Moderate pace

The journey

Trip highlights
  • 01 Climb Mount Kilimanjaro via the lesser-known Rongai Route
  • 02 Experience scenic views of Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks
  • 03 Witness the first peach-hued rays of light at Uhuru Peak
  • 04 Trek through dense forest, moorland, and lunar lava landscapes

Go on a 6-day trek to Mount Kilimanjaro via the Rongai Route, a lesser-known track that usually has far lower traffic than the other five-night routes. While it may not be quite as spectacular as the western routes, it retains a sense of unspooling wilderness and offers a different perspective on Kilimanjaro by approaching the mountain from the north. This route takes you through dense forest, moorland, alpine desert, and up to Uhuru Peak.

The itinerary

1
Day 01

Rongai Gate Trek to Simba Camp

  • Pick up from the hotel and drive to Marangu Gate (approximately 1.8 km).
  • Complete the necessary park registration and proceed to Nalemoru Gate (just under 2 km).
  • Meet the crew and enjoy a comforting hot lunch served at the gate.
  • Embark on the great journey to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trek starts with a twisting path that intersects with a field of maize.
  • Enter the canopies of the dense forest and walk along the moist floor. The trees above the misty paths are home to the striking blue monkey, the contrasting black and white colobus, and the adorable bushbaby. The trek lasts three to four hours.
  • Spend the night at Simba Camp (2650 m).

Comprehensive camping facilities are provided.

Day 02

Simba Camp to Kikelewa Caves Camp

  • In the morning, start the journey towards Kibo.
  • Arrive at the second ancient cave, where an appetizing hot lunch will be served.
  • After lunch, trek through a brief section of the barren dunes of the moorland and continue amid the heather vegetation zone, which is studded with ethereal, enormous lobelias. There is a high possibility of viewing the breathtaking display of Kibo Peak. There is also a chance to spot jackals and the odd buffalo.
  • Reach Kikelewa Caves Camp and relax for the remaining hours of the day (3600 m).

Day 03

Kikelewa Caves to Mawenzi Tarn Hut

  • Enjoy breakfast at the campsite.
  • Start the trek on a short inclined pasture that leads to an area of wilderness. A low desert environment will replace the limited vegetation.
  • Arrive at Mawenzi Tarn Hut (4,330 m), where a delectable hot lunch will be served. There is a possibility of small excursions for acclimatisation taking place.
  • Spend the rest of the day lounging at the campsite.
4
Day 04

Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut via The Saddle

  • Travel up to a desolate site that leads to 'The Saddle' - an extensive lunar lava stone landscape that stretches between Mawenzi and Kibo. The journey is complemented by the marvelous views of the towering upper regions of Kilimanjaro.
  • Reach Kibo Huts (4703 m), and a steaming hot meal will be served in the afternoon.
  • Relax for the remainder of the day.
  • Get to bed early for the climb to the summit at midnight.
5
Day 05

Midnight Summit Climb to Uhuru Peak and Descent to Horombo Hut

  • Start the voyage to the summit at midnight. This is the longest and most laborious day of the whole trek. The trail consists of a long, sharp slope until passing Hans Meyer Cave. At this point, the path transforms into a twisting, single-file lane.
  • Head to Gillman's Point (5685 m) using a brief path with terrain that is laden with rocks, where some climbing is necessary. This is the biggest difficulty of the ascension.
  • Reach Gillman's Point, or the lips of Kilimanjaro, indicating that Uhuru Peak (5885 m) is merely a two-hour hike away.
  • Arrive at Uhuru and behold the spectacle of the first peach-hued rays of light brushing against the ice-laden fields of the Mawenzi Peaks.
  • Start the descent to Kibo Hut and take a short, desirable break.
  • Proceed to Horombo Huts and, at this point, beam with joy at the sight of the sleeping bag.

Day 06

Descent to Marangu Gate and Transfer Out

  • After breakfast, descend to Marangu Gate.
  • Encounter Mandara Hut and travel through the lush rainforest once again.
  • Reach Marangu Gate and receive the certificate.
  • Transport back to the hotel, where a piping hot shower, soft mattress, and fresh clothes await.
  • Transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport.
