The itinerary

1
Day 01

Moshi to Rongai Gate and Trek to Simba Camp

  • In the morning, transfer from the hotel to Marangu Gate (1.8 km).
  • Complete the park registration on arrival, then proceed to Nalemoru Gate (under 2 km). The extended drive to the gate is filled with astonishing scenery and passes through a native village.
  • Enjoy an appetizing hot lunch at the gate, followed by introductions to the crew members.
  • Begin the Rongai Route trek to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. The winding path through golden maize fields leads to the entrance of the oak-brown forest.
  • You may encounter striking black-and-white colobus monkeys or the adorable bush baby.
  • Arrive at Simba Camp for the night.

(2650 m / 3-4 hours of hiking).

2
Day 02

Simba Camp to Second Cave Camp

  • After a delicious breakfast, continue trekking toward the looming peak of Kibo and on to Second Cave.
  • Walk on a gentle incline through the fuscous-brown moorland and heather vegetation zones. The arid plains are scattered with hoary desert plants, while the heather is marked by whimsical vegetation and celestially enormous trees.
  • Enjoy a hot lunch at Second Cave Camp (3150 m / 3-4 hours).
  • Take a short excursion toward Third Cave to aid the acclimatization process, or simply relax. These excursions increase the chances of witnessing marvellous sights, including the distinct crown of Mawenzi's serrated, dark peak speckled with snow.
  • You may encounter wildlife such as buffaloes or jackals.
  • See the spectacular form of Kibo Peak, the summit peak, which is best observed from this angle.

The tents will be assembled at Second Cave.

3
Day 03

Second Cave Camp to Kikelewa Caves

  • After breakfast, start the trek advancing toward Kibo.
  • Travel through an exposed area of moorland and heather to reach Kikelewa Caves Camp. There is a high chance of viewing Kibo, often shrouded in ghost-grey mist.
  • Look out for great buffalo with winding horns, as well as more jackals.
  • Enjoy a tantalizing lunch served at the campsite.
4
Day 04

Kikelewa Caves to Mawenzi Tarn

  • After breakfast, continue to Mawenzi Tarn Hut (4,330 m).
  • Traverse a malachite-green slope, with birdsong breaking the quiet as clouds shaped like tufty pillows drift slowly across the sky. The parched fauna and flora of the moorland are temporarily left behind as you travel through this wild region.
  • Proceed through a low desert area. The comforting aromas of a delicious hot lunch will drift through the entrance of Mawenzi Tarn Hut. (6000 m / 3-4 hour trek).
  • Brief acclimatization excursions may take place, but the remaining afternoon hours will be spent relaxing around the campsite.
5
Day 05

Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut

  • Start the trek from Mawenzi Tarn Hut on a route that gradually becomes a steeper, rockier trail.
  • Cross the meek landscape of the ashen 'Saddle', an expansive lava-stone ridge between Mawenzi and Kibo, which provides stunning views of the lofty peak of Kilimanjaro.
  • Enjoy an appetizing warm meal after arriving at Kibo Hut (4703 m).
  • Spend a relaxing evening and go to bed early in preparation for the midnight summit trek.
6
Day 06

Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and Descent to Horombo Hut

  • Depart from the huts shortly after midnight and undertake the most demanding day of the entire trek.
  • Reach the beautiful Hans Meyer Cave. From here, the trail follows a long scree incline and then becomes a single-file zigzag. A rocky path, with wildflowers bursting from the earth and their azure gongs attached, leads to Gillman's Point (5685 m). The pollen drifts like floating grains of pixie dust in the blustery wind. This is the most challenging section of the route.
  • Reach Gillman's Point, marking the final two hours of the hike to Uhuru Peak (5895 m). On Africa's rooftop, the gleaming landscape is smothered in wispy clouds and pale streaks. An amethyst-purple tint spreads across the sky as the sun begins to rise, soon setting the horizon aglow. Sunlight washes the ice fields with a golden radiance, and the sugar-frosted coating glints.
  • Marvel at the view and celebrate your accomplishment before beginning the descent to Kibo Hut.
  • Continue to Horombo Hut, the final destination for the day.
  • Enjoy a well-deserved slumber.
7
Day 07

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate and Return to Moshi

  • Enjoy an appetizing breakfast, then continue past Mandara Hut and through the magnificent rainforest before reaching Marangu Gate.
  • Receive your summit certificates for completing the 7-day Rongai Route, followed by short festivities with the porters.
  • Transfer to the hotel, where a steaming shower and plush bedding await.
  • Drive to Kilimanjaro Airport, where it is time to say goodbye to Tanzania and its friendly people.

Know before you go

  • We provide camping equipment, including tents, sleeping mattresses, tables, and chairs.
  • We also provide all cooking equipment for the safari.
  • You can climb Kilimanjaro all year round if you have the right equipment, but August to October is the climbing season, as it tends to be drier during these months. The disadvantage of this time is that it's Kilimanjaro's rush hour. If you want peace, climb in June.
