Located about 20 kilometres east of Arusha town, Mount Meru is the second-highest mountain in Tanzania and offers a rewarding multi-day climb through Arusha National Park. Accompanied by armed ranger(s), you will enjoy a walking safari as you pass groups of African buffaloes, zebras, and black-and-white colobus monkeys on the way to the mountain. This trek combines scenic hiking, wildlife encounters, and the chance to summit one of Tanzania's most striking peaks.

The itinerary

Day 01

Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

  • After breakfast, depart Moshi at about 8:30 a.m. and drive to Momella Gate.
  • Make the payment and start the climb with a picnic lunch to the first hut, called Miriakamba Hut.

Dinner and overnight at Miriakamba Hut (3 1/2 hrs).

Day 02

Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

  • After breakfast, proceed with the climb to the second hut, called Saddle Hut. This part is much steeper compared to the first section (2 1/2 hrs).
  • During the afternoon, the client can decide to attempt climbing Little Meru Peak and return.

Dinner and overnight at Saddle Hut.

Day 03

Saddle Hut to Summit and Back to Saddle Hut

  • Wake up in the middle of the night and have a cup of tea before starting the climb to Meru Peak.
  • Proceed to the summit, crossing a rocky path, and return to Saddle Hut for a full breakfast.
  • Take a short rest and leave Saddle Hut.

Day 04

Saddle Hut to Momella Gate

  • Leave Saddle Hut and descend to Momella Gate via the first hut, Miriakamba, where you will be transferred to Arusha.
