Cycling from Struga to Kalista, St. Athanasius and St. Archangel Mihail

  • Ride a bike from Struga to Radozda and enjoy the beautiful views of the unique Ohrid Lake along the way.

  • The first stop is the village of Kalista to visit the 14th-century Church of the Nativity of Mother of God, an Orthodox church in North Macedonia. According to legend, there was once a medieval church here. During the early 19th century, the locals decided to build a new church on the same site.

  • Then, visit the cave church of St. Athanasius, built in the 14th century in honour of Archbishop Athanasius of Alexandria. It can only be reached by the same old rock stairs that are as old as the church itself. It is tiny inside, but full of frescoes connected to the 14th century, although painted in the 19th century. Moreover, this church is home to the most extensive collection of Middle Ages paintings around Struga.

  • Take a break before visiting the largest cave church, St. Archangel Mihail. This natural cave overlooks the village of Radozhda near Struga and is considered one of the oldest cave churches near Lake Ohrid. The frescoes date from the 13th century, and the church was built in honour of St. Michael the Archangel. An interesting fact about the church is that it served as a hiding place for the locals during World War II.
