Ancient Olympia Site and Museum Visit
First, visit the archaeological site, where you'll see the massive Temple of Zeus, the largest temple in the Peloponnese, along with the various buildings erected around it. These include athletic premises used for the preparation and celebration of the Olympic Games, such as the training centres of the Gymnasium and Palaestra, as well as administrative buildings and smaller monuments.
Then, explore the oldest temple in Olympia, the Temple of Hera. Nowadays, the temple serves as the backdrop for the Olympic flame-lighting ceremony. The remaining space inside the site was filled with numerous altars and statues of gods, heroes, and Olympic winners, dedicated by Greek cities or wealthy individuals, such as the Nike of Paionios.
East of the temples lies the stadium where the Olympic Games were held; we will visit this area.
Then, proceed to the nearby museum, where you'll be able to admire some of the finest pieces of ancient Greek art, such as the sculptures from the Temple of Zeus, the statue of Nike of Paionios, the statue of Hermes and the infant Dionysus, the bronze collection of ancient armour, and the collection of clay vases and figurines.
Lastly, we stop at Olympia Market, which is located near the museum. Here, you can grab a bite of authentic Greek food and also shop for souvenirs.
The tour ends here.
