The itinerary

1
Day 01

Addis Ababa, Entoto Hills and Dorze Village

  • From Addis Ababa, drive to the Entoto Hills, passing splendid views of the city. Visit the Holy Trinity Cathedral Church or St. George's Cathedral Church on your way to the airport.
  • Fly to Arba Minch in the afternoon and visit the Dorze people, one of the many interesting tribes known for making traditional clothes woven from cotton. Visit a family in the tribe and see how this traditional wear is made, as well as how "Kocho," a unique staple food, is prepared from the false banana tree.

Spend the night in a hotel in Arba Minch.

Day 02

Lake Chamo Boat Trip and Konso Villages

  • Enjoy a morning boat trip on Lake Chamo, referred to as "the crocodile market," near Arba Minch. The lake is rich in wildlife such as hippos and crocodiles, as well as a variety of birdlife.
  • Then depart Arba Minch on a drive towards Jinka, visiting the Konso tribe and their UNESCO-registered villages en route. Observe their indigenous techniques of terracing the land.

Day 03

Mursi Village Visit and Hamer Territory

  • Drive to Mursi village in the morning. The Mursi are a semi-nomadic tribe living close to the Omo River, and their women are known for inserting lip plates in their lower lips. Visit one of their villages and return to Jinka around noon for lunch.
  • In the afternoon, drive to Turmi, one of the towns in the territory of the Hamer tribe, and visit a Hamer village. Continue on to Turmi.

Day 04

Dassenech Excursion and Local Market

  • Set out on an excursion to the other side of the Omo River to visit another tribe, the Dassenech. Once you get to the nearby town of Omorate, you can use a wooden canoe to cross the river. Spend time exploring the villages and learning about the tribe. Take pictures before returning to Turmi.
  • If it is a market day in Turmi or Dimeka, you can visit the local market early in the afternoon.

Day 05

Ari Village, Mercato and Cultural Evening

  • Drive to Jinka in the morning. Visit a village of the Ari tribe, the tribe with the highest population among all 16 tribes of the South Omo Valley, before transferring to the airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa.
  • Once in Addis Ababa, visit Mercato, the largest open-air market in Africa.
  • In the evening, you will be our guest at one of the cultural restaurants in Addis Ababa to see a variety of Ethiopian traditional dances while enjoying the country's most delicious food and drinks. Then you will be transferred to the airport for your flight back home.

What to bring

  • Most places in Ethiopia are free of malaria, as they are located in areas above 2000 meters above sea level. However, bring mosquito repellent for your convenience.
  • While walking outdoors, it is advised that you use sunblock, so you need to bring sunblock.

Know before you go

Before coming to Ethiopia, visitors should have a tourist visa. Regarding how to obtain a visa, please follow the link.

  • Be advised to cover your head, especially for females, and your body while visiting religious places.
  • Ethiopia has a unique cuisine. The most famous is a flatbread known as "injera," prepared from the gluten-free grain "teff" and served with a variety of stews and hot sauces.
  • Ethiopia also requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate for travellers aged 9 months or older arriving from countries with a risk of yellow fever transmission, and for travellers who have transited for more than 12 hours through an airport in a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission.
  • The Hamer people are one of the tribes in the southern Omo Valley and are said to be masters of body decoration, using different metallic materials and natural colours from clay and chalk. They have an interesting cultural ritual called "bull jumping" that marks the coming-of-age of boys into adulthood. If you are lucky, you might see one of these rituals.

The following information concerns precautions travellers should take while coming to Ethiopia in connection with COVID-19:

  • All passengers travelling to Ethiopia must present a negative PCR test certificate for COVID-19 before boarding a flight. The certificate validity should not exceed 120 hours on arrival from the date the sample is given.
  • Children aged 12 years or younger are exempt from the PCR test certificate requirement.
  • There is no COVID-19 test to be done on arrival in Addis Ababa.
  • Rapid diagnostic test (RDT antibody test) certificates are not acceptable.
  • The above requirement does not apply to transit passengers.
