The itinerary

Day 01

Navigate the Amazon River to the Lodge

  • In Iquitos, you will be greeted by Yaku Amazon staff and transferred to the Iquitos port. Alternatively, travel by highway to the San Joaquin port. We then board a comfortable boat to navigate the longest, widest, and most voluminous river in the world, the Amazonas. We then navigate a tributary of the Amazon, the Yanayacu River, to reach our lodge.

  • After lunch, depart for an afternoon and evening adventure along the Corrientes, Purura, and the Yanayaku tributary. Embark on a boat trip in search of a range of birds: horned screamers, tapaculos, horneros, parrots, muscovy ducks, cormorants, jacanas, blue and yellow macaws, and more.

  • Disembark the boat for a walk in the Igapo forest, a seasonally flooded primary jungle, to find land animals such as monkeys, reptiles, and insects. While walking, you will be amazed at the huge size of the kapok, or Lupuna tree, Ceiba Pentandra, as it towers over the other rainforest vegetation.

  • After the walk, we board the boat to observe the beautiful Amazon sunset.

  • Gaze at the night sky and marvel at the stunning stars creating constellations of the Southern Hemisphere. After dinner, relax and listen to the sounds of the forest.

Day 02

Explore Black-Water Lakes and Igapo Forest

  • After breakfast, travel to the black-water lakes Corrientes and Oje by boat, and then explore these lakes by rowing in a wooden canoe. Search for iguanas, three-toed sloths, squirrel monkeys, cormorants, herons, kingfishers, parrots, horned screamers, blue and yellow macaws, black-collared hawks, great black hawks, vultures, toucans, and more.

  • After lunch, continue the exploration by boat.

We then slowly navigate the water to search for caimans, night birds, fishing bats, nocturnal fish, insects, and capybaras.

Dinner, then relax and listen to the night sounds of the forest.

Day 03

Fish, Spot Dolphins, and Walk the Jungle at Night

  • Explore the lakes Corrientes and Purura, and the tributary Yanayaku by boat in search of iguanas, sloths, different monkey species, and the many species of birds.

  • View one of the largest aquatic plants in the world, the Victoria Regia water lilies. The gigantic floating leaves can measure up to 3 meters across.

  • After lunch, continue the boat excursion. Also, observe one of the most beautiful Amazon River species, the grey and pink dolphins. Swim by their side and use a hydrophone and speaker to listen to their low-frequency sounds.

  • Returning to the lodge, our search continues for caimans, night birds, bats, tarantulas, frogs, fish, fireflies, and more.

  • After dinner, a night walk in the Igapo forest affords an experience of the rainforest's nocturnal wonders. Be surrounded by jungle sounds while finding unique and diverse creatures. Find beautiful tree frogs, cane toads, night monkeys, tarantulas, scorpions and other arachnids, insects, sleeping birds, snakes, and lizards.

Day 04

Visit Ayacucho Village and Varzea Forest

  • Walk behind the lodge in primary and seasonally flooded forest to learn about the biodiversity of the flora and fauna. Find medicinal plants and learn their many uses, while also discovering fauna.

  • After breakfast, visit the native village of Ayacucho to learn about their culture, folklore, and life in this part of the world. From March through December, you may have a chance to visit the schools of the community.

  • Walk in the Varzea forest along Lake Ipahuantillo in search of the only ruminant bird in the Amazon. It is a prehistoric-looking bird called the hoatzin.

  • After lunch, return by sailing to San Joaquin in our safe and comfortable boat, and then go by highway to Iquitos, where we travel to the airport or your hotel.
