Set off on a rewarding 14-day journey through Peru and Bolivia, visiting Lima, Cusco, Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley, Puno, Lake Titicaca, Copacabana, Uyuni and La Paz. Explore the enchanting Peruvian capital, travel through the Andes by train to the breathtaking "lost city" of Machu Picchu, and discover Inca heritage in Cusco and the Sacred Valley. Continue across Lake Titicaca to island communities and onward to the vast Salar de Uyuni before ending in the windy city of La Paz.

Meet a local representative and follow him to the bus station to go up by a zigzag road for 30 minutes to reach the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, known as the lost city of the Incas.

The itinerary

1
Day 01

Arrival in Lima and City of the Kings Tour

  • Welcome upon arrival by a local representative and drive to the hotel.

  • After resting for a while, start visiting the most exciting places of the "City of the Kings": the Cathedral, Pizarro's Tomb, the Catacombs of San Francisco, passing through the Congress and the Palace of Torre Tagle.

  • See a significant quantity of pre-Inca pottery, including the world's biggest collection of erotic Huacos.

  • Complete the city tour and return to the hotel for an overnight stay.

Day 02

Fly to Cusco and Explore the Imperial City

  • Reach Lima airport at least two hours before your flight leaves for Cusco. You only have to approach the airline counter and display your ID to check in. The flight to Cusco lasts 1 hour and 10 minutes.

  • Welcome upon arrival in Cusco, "The Archaeological Capital of America," by a local representative.

  • Drive to the hotel and drink coca tea, then rest for a while.

  • Around 1:30 pm, get picked up from the hotel to start visiting the following attractive sites with a professional guide:

    • Koricancha Palace and Convent of Santo Domingo: This religious centre is known as "The Temple of the Sun," where you will admire the impressive engineering used in its construction.

    • The Cathedral: A colonial religious monument of extraordinary artistic value.

    • Sacsayhuaman: Built 3 kilometres from the city of Cusco, this is an impressive stone fortress with excellent architecture, famous for its huge carved stones, some of which are 9 m/30 feet high and weigh 350 tons. This is where the Inty Raymi, or Fiesta del Sol, is held every June.

    • Qenqo: A ceremonial and ritual centre, an arena where sacrifices were made.

    • Puca-Pucara: An old tambo (resting place), used as a monitoring place throughout the Inka Empire routes.

    • Tambomachay: Located 7 kilometres from the city of Cusco, this ceremonial centre of cult to water is traditionally known as the place where water rests.

Day 03

Train Journey to Machu Picchu

  • Get picked up between 5:45 am and 6:00 am from your hotel in Cusco and drive to the train station, located in Poroy.

  • Board the train and start heading to Aguas Calientes.

  • Meet a local representative and follow him to the bus station to go up by a zigzag road for 30 minutes to reach the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, known as the lost city of the Incas.

  • Reach Machu Picchu, pass through the control room and get the entrance tickets.

  • Visit the main square, the Circular Tower, the sacred solar watch, the royal rooms, the Temple of the Three Windows and the cemeteries. The tour lasts for about two hours.

  • Walk around the citadel and have your meals at any restaurant in Aguas Calientes or, if you wish, at Sanctuary Lodge (this is not included).

  • Return by train to Cusco between 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm. The guide will be waiting for you at the train station and will take you back to your hotel.

Day 04

Sacred Valley of the Incas Excursion

  • Start around 9:00 am, and the guide will pick you up at your hotel.

  • Set off on a guided tour to the Sacred Valley of the Incas, over the Vilcanota River, with a panoramic view of Pisac, an old Inca city.

  • Visit the Inca market in this village, where you will have the chance to know its people and get good bargains from handicrafts and souvenir sellers.

  • Head towards Urubamba, travelling along the borders of the Vilcanota River.

  • Have lunch at a restaurant in the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

  • In the afternoon, visit the fortress and citadel of Ollantaytambo, built to watch the entrance to this part of the valley and protect it from invasions by jungle inhabitants.

  • Walk through the narrow streets and clearly understand how this military, religious and cultural centre was during the Inca Empire.

  • On the way back to Cusco, stop by the colourful village of Chinchero.

  • See the ruins of the Tupac Inca Yupanqui Royal House and appreciate its well-preserved Inca wall in the main square.

  • Visit the beautiful colonial temple with invaluable portraits, built over Inca bases. Then, return to Cusco.

Day 05

Journey from Cusco to Puno via Raqchi

  • Reach the bus station to start the trip to Puno. This tour lasts around 8 hours, during which you will have 4 guided visits:

    • Andahuaylillas Temple, or the South American Sistine Chapel

    • Inka Temple of Raqchi and buffet lunch in Sicuani

    • La Raya at 4335 m.a.s.l.

    • Inka Aymara Museum of Pukara

      Every visit lasts 20 to 40 minutes, during which passengers will be able to ask questions, take photos and walk for a while.

  • Arrive in Puno, where a local representative will take you to the hotel.

Day 06

Lake Titicaca, Uros and Taquile Island

  • Early in the morning, get picked up from your hotel and transfer to the harbour.

  • Start your boat excursion on Lake Titicaca by visiting the Uros Floating Islands, a small community that has lived on these reed islands for decades.

  • Continue your journey towards Taquile Island (approximately 2 hours) and experience a traditional Quechua-speaking community, full of ancient agricultural terraces and some ruins dating back to pre-Inca times.

  • At the top of the island, you will have free time to explore on your own, and afterwards you will meet the group for lunch at a local restaurant.

  • Descend to the harbour to take your boat back to Puno. You will be back in Puno at approximately 5:00 pm.

Day 07

Copacabana and Isla del Sol Discovery

  • Go to the Puno bus terminal to board the tour bus heading to Copacabana; the trip takes 3 hours.

  • Visit the Cathedral, the Shrine of the Black Virgin and the main square.

  • After lunch, take a tour to Isla del Sol across the lake for about an hour and a half to reach the southern part of the island, where you will see the archaeological remains of "Pillcokaina-Temple Inca," a religious centre.

  • Go for a short walk through the steps of Yumani until you reach the Fountain of Youth, where you can cool off with a bit of holy water. It is believed that this source is the source of eternal youth. Also, enjoy the beauty of the Garden of the Incas.

At night, rest in a selected hotel in Copacabana.

Day 08

From Copacabana to La Paz and Overnight to Uyuni

  • Tour the city of Copacabana in the morning. Purchase handicrafts and souvenirs, and learn more about local customs and the daily life of the settlers in the area.

  • Board the bus to La Paz at around 1:30 pm.

  • Upon arrival, meet the staff who will take you on a trip around town.

  • Have a delicious dinner at a local restaurant.

  • Board the bus to the town of Uyuni at around 9:00 pm.

Day 09

Arrival in Uyuni and Salar de Uyuni Tour

  • Welcome upon arrival by a local representative and drive to the hotel in the town of Uyuni.

  • Have breakfast and then begin the trip to Salar de Uyuni, the world's largest salt desert.

  • Continue to Incahuasi Island, also known as Fish Island.

  • Head towards the town of San Juan, where you will spend the night in the house of a villager, with hot showers and basic services available.

Day 10

San Juan, High Desert Landscapes and Laguna Colorada

  • Have breakfast in the town of San Juan.

  • Cross Salar de Chiguana. The road climbs from 3600 to 4200 meters high.

  • Along the Chilean border, go to the foot of the volcanoes Ollagüe, which is still active, and Tomasamil (5900 m).

  • Cross the path called the Jewels: Cañapa gaps, Stinking, Honda and Ch'arkota.

  • See a diverse fauna ranging from alpacas and llamas to rheas and pink flamingos.

  • Continue through the desert before transferring from Siloli to Laguna Colorada in the afternoon.

Day 11

Geysers, Dali Desert and Laguna Verde

  • Leave at 6:00 am on a trip to the geysers - Sol de Mañana. It is a volcanic crater with sulfur fumes and vapours of heavy water.

  • Visit Salt Lake before crossing the Dali Desert.

  • At the appointed time, arrive at the Green Lagoon at the foot of Licancabur volcano.

  • Transfer to Uyuni to board the bus back to the city of La Paz. The bus leaves at 9:00 pm.

The trip takes 10 hours; overnight bus journey.

Day 12

La Paz City Tour and Evening Dance Show

  • Welcome upon arrival by a local representative and drive to the hotel in La Paz. Take a rest in the morning.

  • In the afternoon, visit the city of La Paz, including its typical artisan market, the colonial Church of San Francisco, the famous witch doctor market, Plaza Murillo, the Government Palace, the Cathedral and the National Congress.

  • Continue to Jaen Avenue, where interesting museums are located.

  • Visit the open-air museum of Tiwanaku culture.

  • Explore the residential areas of Obrajes, Calocoto and Florida, finishing with a visit to the magical Valley of the Moon.

  • In the evening, enjoy a show of typical dances and colourful costumes.

Overnight stay at the hotel in La Paz.

Day 13

Return to Puno and Visit Sillustani

  • Transfer to La Paz bus terminal to board the bus. In 6 hours, you will reach the city of Puno.

  • Reach Puno, where a local representative will welcome you upon arrival and drive you to the hotel. Take a rest for a while.

  • Proceed for a tour to the Chullpas of Sillustani, pre-Inca burial towers located on the shores of Lake Umayo.

Overnight stay at the hotel in Puno.

Day 14

Juliaca Flight to Lima and Departure

  • After breakfast at the hotel, take some time to visit the centre of the city of Puno.

  • In time, get picked up from your hotel and transfer to Juliaca airport, which is about an hour from Puno.

  • Bid adieu and catch the flight to Lima. Your beautiful journey to Peru comes to an end here.
