It is located in the heart of the Sinai Peninsula at a height of 1,570 meters, in the place where, according to tradition, Moses saw the bush on fire that did not burn up. The monastery is Orthodox and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It dates back to the age of Emperor Justinian in the 6th century. It was also the time when the enclosure wall surrounding the monastery was built. The monastery was named Saint Catherine at the beginning of the 11th century in honour of Saint Catherine, one of the earliest Alexandrian Christian martyrs. It contains several monuments, including the burning bush seen by Moses and the remarkable Icons Gallery.
