Johannesburg Inner City and Maboneng Walking Tour

  • Meet your tour guide in Braamfontein and set off with a stop at Park Station, the central railway station in Johannesburg and the largest railway station in Africa.

  • Catch a local bus to travel deeper into the city.

  • Hop off the bus and take a walk along the famous Main Street Mall, where you will learn about the history of gold in Johannesburg.

  • Visit the law office of Nelson Mandela and OR Tambo.

  • Have the opportunity to go underground in one of the well-preserved mining stopes.

  • Make another stop at the impressive statue of a youthful Gandhi and artwork celebrating Joburg's multicultural roots before moving to the base of the Carlton Centre. The Carlton Centre used to be the tallest building in Africa and the Southern Hemisphere for almost 40 years.

  • Head up to the 50th floor to soak up the views and get the lay of the land before hitting the pavements and strolling down streets lined with both historic and modern buildings. If you are a street art lover, let your guide know so you can be shown some very interesting street art and graffiti.

  • Learn how, in the '90s, Johannesburg was labelled a dark city and a no-go area, but in 2008 things changed for the better with the development of the Maboneng Cultural Precinct. Maboneng is the most vibrant and trendy area of Johannesburg. You will see with your own eyes just how far South Africa has come since the apartheid regime, when Johannesburg was still considered one of the most dangerous cities in the world. South Africans today are proud to be known as a relatively safe, multicultural city with a lot to offer visitors.

  • Finish exploring Maboneng and either catch a minibus taxi or city bus back to Park Station, where your tour ends.
