Historic Walk Through Derry's Walled Past

  • Walk through the older history of Derry and the surrounding area. Derry is one of the longest continuously used areas in Ireland, dating back some 6,000 years. St Colmcille established his monastery on the island of Doire in 546 before going to Iona in the western isles of Scotland, bringing Christianity to Britain.

  • Examine other aspects of this tour, including Elizabeth I's advance into Ulster, which brought Anglicization and the Protestant religion. The Irish response to this invasion was the Nine Years' War (1594-1603), ending with the Flight of the Earls in 1607.

  • Learn how the Plantation of Ulster brought thousands of English and Scot Protestants to Ulster, along with the building of the City Walls in 1613, making it an English stronghold.

  • Find out how Derry became Londonderry under James I and was financed by the Guilds of London, from which the Guildhall gets its name.

  • Hear about the Siege of Derry, which played a huge part in the history of the city, with the occupants enduring 105 days of siege.

  • Understand why the Fountain Estate, Derry Gaol, the Apprentice Boys, and the Great Hunger are covered on this tour.
