Bogside History Tour in Derry

  • Begin this 90-minute walking tour at Free Derry Wall and head into the heart of the Bogside district of Derry, the crucible of the modern-day conflict in Ireland.

  • Commence the history tour with the partition of Ireland and the reasons why the six-county state exists, as well as the sectarian nature of its very existence. The widespread, government-backed religious discrimination against Irish Catholics in this part of Ireland led to the formation of the Civil Rights movement in 1967 to campaign for equality.

  • Learn about the Battle of the Bogside in August 1969, which saw the British Army and the IRA begin a long war that lasted until the mid-1990s. The Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association, which was formed in 1967, grew in stature over the following years.

  • Gain insights into Bloody Sunday (30th January 1972), which was Britain's answer to Catholic demands for civil rights in Ireland and led to the downfall of the Civil Rights Association and an escalation in the Irish-British conflict.

  • Get answers to both inquiries into Bloody Sunday, Widgery and Saville, which will also be examined on the tour.
