Know before you go

  • Inhaca is an island located at the entrance of Maputo Bay, in southern Mozambique, with geographical coordinates of 26ºS latitude and 33ºE longitude. It has an area of 42 km² and dimensions of 12.5 km from north to south (between Ponta Mazondue in the north and Ponta Torres in the south) and 7 km from east to west. It is located 32 km east of the city of Maputo, of which the municipality is an administrative part, constituting a municipal district, the KaNyaka district. Although small, this island has excellent tourist importance since it has great biological diversity, with about 12,000 registered species, including about 150 species of corals, more than 300 species of birds, and four species of turtles that nest there. The entire coastal zone, a consolidated dune with natural vegetation, is protected as an integral reserve, as is the nearby Portuguese Island (formerly known as Ilha dos Elefantes), under the responsibility of the Maritime Biology Station, an organ of Eduardo Mondlane University. According to the 2007 census, the local population corresponds to a population density of around 142 inhabitants per km², taking into account the area of 42 km² and the population of 5,216. From 1550, the newly arrived Portuguese created a trading post on Ilha dos Elefantes, close to the island of Inhaca, which later became known as Ilha dos Portugueses. The settlement of the Portuguese resulted from an agreement with the local powers of Inhaca. Thus, the Tsonga people served as intermediaries between the Portuguese and the Zulu in the ivory trade. On November 8, 1892, during the Portuguese Empire, the noble title of Barão de Inhaca was created.
