Nairobi National Park, Elephant Orphanage and Giraffe Centre
6:00 am. Meet your tour guide at your hotel or residence within Nairobi for a drive to Nairobi National Park. The aim is to start early to witness the morning sunrise on the horizon and capture the early hunting activities of predators. You shall be on the lookout for the Big 4 of Africa that can possibly be spotted in this park. Plenty of other herbivores can also be seen, including zebras, giraffes, gazelles, hartebeest, warthogs, and hippos. A variety of birdlife is also abundant in the park's grasslands, forest, and cliffs.
10:30 am. Arrive at the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, located on the southern edge of Nairobi National Park. This is an interesting elephant reintegration centre where rescued baby elephants are cared for before being reintroduced into their natural environment. A lecture on an individual orphan is presented by a resident guide as you watch them wallow and tackle each other in the mud. You will also see the young elephants being fed formula milk by their handlers. This informative and interesting activity takes about 1 hour.
12:00 pm. Find a convenient place for lunch. Nairobi has a broad range of restaurants and fast-food joints to choose from.
2:00 pm. Proceed to the Giraffe Centre, a place set up by the African Fund for Endangered Species to care for the rare Rothschild giraffe. This is the only centre of its kind in Africa, where you will enjoy a closer view of these gentle giants from a raised platform. The resident guide will offer a conservation lecture about the centre. You will also get a chance to shop at the gift shop, which has souvenirs decorated with giraffe images.
4:00 pm. Start your journey back to the hotel, with the option to visit Kazuri Beads and Art Craft for shopping and a demonstration of actual artwork.
5:00 pm. Return to the hotel after an amazing and interesting day of Nairobi excursion.
