Driving Tour of Old San Juan's Historic Landmarks
- Visit the State Capitol on the outskirts, where you are rewarded with beautiful mosaics and gain a broader sense of Puerto Rican identity.
- Continue driving into and through the most famous landmarks of the San Juan National Historic Site.
- Back in the vehicle, as you enter the old city, view Castillo San Cristóbal and El Morro.
- Stop at Ballajá and take pictures as you stroll about the battlefield, touching the battlement walls and their embrasures.
- Look down at the cemetery below, between you and the shore.
- Finish the tour with a drive down Cristo Street, where La Catedral San Juan Bautista and La Fortaleza, the Governor's Palace, are found. Your San Juan guide will show you around, spotlighting the best the city offers, along with its history and mystique.
Some sights you'll see include:
San Juan Cathedral (1528), the cathedral, basilica, and first place of worship.
La Fortaleza (1533), the oldest seat of government in continuous use in the Americas.
Columbus Square (1772), between the historic old city and the new.
Ballajá Barracks (1854), the last Spanish construction of monumental proportions in the Americas. It has served as barracks, a hospital, a culture center, and remains part of Puerto Rico's patrimony to the world.
State Capitol (1924), built to guard the city's harbour entrance.
