If conditions allow, witness the famous Blue Flame sulphur phenomenon and take in inspiring dawn views over Ijen Lake. This short adventure combines an overnight stay in the Ijen area with an early-morning hike to the crater rim.

Walk down to the rim of Ijen Lake at the break of dawn, if weather permits and it is safe to do so according to the authorities.

The itinerary

Day 01

Surabaya Arrival and Transfer to the Ijen Area

Be escorted from Juanda International Airport by your Java tour guide.
Travel to the Mount Ijen area.
Check in at Ijen View Hotel Bondowoso.

Day 02

Midnight Departure and Trek to Ijen Peak

Proceed with your trip at around 23:30 and travel to the Paltuding area.
Have breakfast (packet food) in the car.
Reach Paltuding at approximately 2:00 am. This is the permit post before hiking to Ijen peak.
See the famous Blue Flame sulphur of Ijen once you are at the peak.
Walk down to the rim of Ijen Lake at the break of dawn, if weather permits and it is safe to do so according to the authorities. You can enjoy the morning lake view of Ijen and walk back to Ijen peak before returning to Paltuding.
Proceed to the car and be dropped off at Surabaya International Airport or Banyuwangi Ketapang Port.

Know before you go

Altitude temperatures at the top of the volcanoes (2,300 m) can range from +2 to +25 degrees. We therefore highly recommend that you come adequately equipped.
The Blue Flames are dependent on moonlight and rain. Thus, if the weather is good, you will be able to see the Blue Flames. We cannot guarantee 100% that they will be visible due to weather conditions, but we can guarantee that we will bring you to the viewpoint.
Pick-up can also be arranged from places around East Java such as Malang, Probolinggo, Bondowoso, and Banyuwangi.
Minimum 2 participants are required for the trip to commence.
