Embark on a 3-day hike through Muong Hoa Valley and explore Lao Chai, one of the area's oldest and largest Hmong villages, along with the rice fields and the mighty Fansipan Mountain. Depending on the time of year, you might catch farmers planting or harvesting rice while witnessing the daily life of northern Vietnam's ethnic minorities. Trek through villages, a bamboo forest, and up to a waterfall viewpoint, then learn about the Red Dzao minority, famous for the red scarves they wear.

You will walk along the edges of the rice fields in the shadow of the mighty Fansipan Mountain rising behind you.

The itinerary

1
Day 01

Lao Chai, Y Linh Ho, and Ta Van Villages

  • Follow your Vietnamese tour guide to Lao Chai village, a beautiful local minority village located approximately 13 km outside Sapa. Start your trip downhill during the first part of this hike. From the main road, a small path will lead you into the Muong Hoa Valley.

  • You will cross the bridge in Y Linh Ho village, a charming little town inhabited by the Hmong minority, then follow the road as it goes up and down.

  • You will walk along the edges of the rice fields in the shadow of the mighty Fansipan Mountain rising behind you.

  • You will cross some hills before entering Lao Chai Village, home to one of the oldest and largest Hmong communities.

  • From Lao Chai, you will walk to Ta Van Village, where you will stay overnight. This village is mostly inhabited by the Giay and Hmong ethnic minorities. If it is the right time of year, you can see the people planting rice or harvesting it and learn the differences between the ethnic minority groups.

  • Reach the homestay. Here, you can walk around the village or watch the family cook dinner.

Day 02

Bamboo Forest, Waterfall, and Ban Ho Village

  • Wake up the next morning and open the window to see the clouds flowing through the valley while the sun starts to rise above the mountains.

  • After a nice breakfast at the homestay, start the next day's trek. From the village, you will walk uphill until you reach a bamboo forest.

  • Continue walking until you reach the top of a waterfall. From here, you will have a beautiful view of the village of Giang Ta Chai.

  • Descend to the river down in the valley. Reach the other side of the small stream and walk to the village, where you will enjoy a well-deserved lunch and can continue the trek to the village of Su Pan.

  • After lunch, continue to Ban Ho village.

Day 03

Nam Toong Red Dzao Village and Return to Sa Pa

  • After a nice breakfast in Ban Ho, continue walking for about 3 km to the village of Nam Toong. In this village, you can learn everything about the Red Dzao minority who live here. The Red Dzao are famous for the red scarves they wear on their heads.

  • After visiting Nam Toong, walk back to Ban Ho, where you will have lunch.

  • After lunch, make your way back to Sa Pa.
