Let's start to discover Transnistria a Soviet Country

Bender city

Bendery is an ancient marvelous city of Pridnestrovie on the right bank of the Dniester River (PMR. History of the city is closely intertwined with the modernity. The city center is very picturesque, where the quarters are primarily buildings of the late 19th – early 20th centuries. There are many historical and architectural monuments in the city, the pearl of the city is the Bendery Fortress.

Benderу Fortress

Benderу Fortress

Bendery Fortress is one of the oldest structures on the territory of Pridnestrovie, an outstanding monument of fortification architecture. The citadel of the fortress was built by the medieval Genoese, and after Bender became part of the Ottoman Empire in 1538, the castle was significantly rebuilt already by the Turks. The citadel, preserved to our days almost in its original form, has eight towers.

Alexander Nevsky Park

Alexander Nevsky Park

Alexander Nevsky Park assembled the citadel and the military church located near its walls into a single complex. The park was opened on October 7, 2018 – on the eve of the 610th anniversary of the first chronicle mention of Bendery.

In the center of the park, there is a bust of the great Russian prince and famous commander Alexander Nevsky that was previously at the walls of the military church. From the monument, the paths like rays lead to the military church and the citadel, exhibition hall, stage, playround and rollerdrome, and other facilities of the park. In early 2019, Old Bastion hotel and restaurant complex, built in the old Turkish style, was opened in the park not far from the Main (Tsaregrad) Gate.

Military-historical memorial complex

Military-historical memorial complex

The military-historical memorial complex in the city of Bendery was opened on October 7, 2008.

It was erected on the site of an old military cemetery, where the remains of many soldiers of the Russian Imperial Army who died in the wars of the 18-20th centuries were laid to rest.

Catherine Park

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the republic, Tiraspol was transformed beyond recognition. The new Catherine Park is located in the very center of the capital city. It is symbolic that the park was named after the Russian empress who signed the decree to found Tiraspol.

Suvorov Square

Suvorov Square is the heart of Tiraspol and Pridnestrovie. It is surrounded by such landmarks as the monument to A.V. Suvorov, François Sainte de Wollant Square, the Dniester embankment, Memorial of Glory, the building of the Youth Creativity Palace, Tiraspol movie-theater, and the Supreme Council.

In Soviet times, it was named the Square of Stalin Constitution, later – of the Soviet Constitution. The square acquired its modern look in the 1970s as a result of the massive restructuring of the city center.

The building of the Supreme Council and the Government of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic

This monumental building was built in 1983 for the Tiraspol City Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. A long series of marble steps leads to a huge building in the historical center of Tiraspol, the building itself clearly represents architectural trends of the late USSR.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, a branch of a state university was located here. Since 1991, the Supreme Council has been sitting in the building – the Parliament of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic.

House of Soviets

House of Soviets

This is one of the most recognizable and magnificent buildings in Tiraspol. Its parameters are impressive: more than 200 rooms and the area of the main hall is almost 300 square meters. Unlike many of the buildings of the Stalinist empire in the republics of the former USSR, this House of Soviets retained all its rich decoration and Soviet symbols. Today, the building keeps its original function and serves as a home for city authorities – the Council of People’s Deputies and local administration. In one of the Soviet comedies – Do not have 100 rubles … – the building ‘played’ the role of the Ministry of Finance, where the characters bring the found treasure.
