Combine two of the most scenic routes on Kenya's highest mountain on this 6-day trek to Point Lenana. Ascend on the dry side of Mount Kenya, known for some of the finest walking on the mountain, with a route that begins on the northwest side and passes through forest into a wide ridge approach to the summit area. Along the way, trek through bamboo forest, giant heather, and alpine terrain before reaching the peak and descending via Naro Moru.

Leave shortly after midnight at 2:00 am for the main peaks and take a break after an hour above a flat green area at the head of the valley known as Temple Fields, arriving at Point Lenana at 6:30 am.

The itinerary

Day 01

Nairobi to Mount Kenya Bandas via Chogoria

  • Get picked up from your hotel, airport, or residential house in the morning as early as 07:30 am by your Kenyan guides. Then depart Nairobi at 08:00 am, driving through agricultural country up to Chogoria town for lunch.

  • After lunch, take a 4x4 and drive up to the edge of the bamboo forest, where you will start your trek through the dense bamboo forest for a distance of 10 km to Mount Kenya Bandas.

Dinner and overnight at the Bandas on a full-board basis.

Day 02

Chogoria to Mount Meru Bandas

  • Leave Nairobi at 7:00 am for Chogoria town and stop for an early lunch.

  • After lunch, take a 4x4WD vehicle to the forest clearing, 16 km from where the walk starts. You will walk for 16 km through the forest along a dirt road that is sometimes very muddy, taking about 4 hours to reach Mount Meru Bandas at 2,950 m.

Dinner and overnight at the Bandas on a full-board basis.

Day 03

Mount Meru Bandas to Road Head Camp

  • After breakfast, follow the track through giant heather and forest up to Chogoria Road Head, from where the path drops to cross a stream and then follows the broad ridge to the east of the Gorges Valley to reach Road Head Camp, taking approximately 3-4 hours.

Overnight at Road Head Camp at 3,300 m.

Dinner and overnight at Road Head Camp on a full-board basis.

Day 04

Road Head to Mintos Hut

  • After breakfast, follow the track through giant heather and forest up to Chogoria Road Head, from where the path drops to cross a stream and then follows the broad ridge to the east of the Gorges Valley to reach Mintos Hut at 4,200 m.

Dinner and overnight at Mintos Hut on a full-board basis.

Day 05

Summit Point Lenana and Descend to Met Station

  • Leave shortly after midnight at 2:00 am for the main peaks and take a break after an hour above a flat green area at the head of the valley known as Temple Fields, arriving at Point Lenana at 6:30 am.

  • After taking photographs, descend to Mackinders for breakfast and continue down to Met Station at 3,000 m.

Dinner and overnight at Met Station on a full-board basis.

Day 06

Met Station to Naromoru and Return to Nairobi

  • After breakfast, descend through the rain forest for 9 km to Naromoru Park Gate at 2,600 m, where you will connect with your transport back to Nairobi, arriving at approximately 3:00 pm.

Know before you go

  • Due to the prevalence of altitude sickness on the mountain, an extra day's acclimatisation before summiting is included.

  • This trek combines two of the most scenic routes on Mount Kenya. The ascent is on the dry side of the mountain, which offers some of the finest walking. Climb through forest into a wide ridge approach to the summit area. The route starts on the northwest side of the mountain near Nanyuki. Access is adequate, and the bunkhouse facilities are the best on this side of the mountain.
