Day 01
Nairobi National Park, Elephant Orphanage and City Highlights
- Meet your tour guide at 6:30 am and begin the tour.
- Make your first stop at one of the most unique national parks in the world. Within minutes of your hotel and the city of Nairobi, you will be transported to a scene of animals roaming in the wild - Nairobi National Park. This is just the first step in a day filled with unexpected wonders. Explore Nairobi National Park: so close to the city, with its skyscrapers filling the horizon, you will find yourself on a broad savannah that is home to lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino, giraffe, and many more. These are the wildlands of Nairobi National Park, Kenya's very first reserve. On your game drives here, just 10 km (6 mi) south of the city, you will be on the lookout for hyena, impala, ostrich, and over 400 species of birds. Most incredible of all, the park hosts zebra and wildebeest moving through this wild space in an epic great migration.
- Meet the young elephants at David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage. Within the park's borders lies perhaps the most special animal sanctuary in the world. You will visit this unique reserve where rescued baby elephants are saved and nursed back to health. Feeding time is at 11:00 am, and you will be there to enjoy the sight of dozens of these babies being fed from enormous milk bottles. Feeding is followed by bath time as the tiny elephants roll about and cavort in giant mud baths.
- It is now lunchtime, so take your choice of dining at the Karen Blixen Coffee Garden or the world-famous Carnivore restaurant.
- Go through the Karen Blixen Museum. If you have read the book or seen the movie "Out of Africa," you are already familiar with the life of writer, planter, and legend Karen Blixen. If not, you will learn all about Blixen in her home on this beautiful homestead at the foot of the Ngong Hills. Here, Blixen established a coffee plantation in colonial Africa. The museum features artifacts from her life and props from the classic movie, which was shot close by.
- Proceed to the Giraffe Center. The tour continues to thrill at this refuge for the endangered Rothschild's giraffe, where you can climb the high platform and try your hand at feeding one of these towering creatures. The grounds include an Information Centre and Nature Trail where you can see warthogs, birds, and more. The Centre is also a favourite of Kenya's schoolchildren, and you are sure to spot plenty of them as well.
- End the day at approximately 5:30 pm as you are transported back to your hotel.
