Day 7: Trek to Dingboche
The trail descends to Dingboche, a small village with Chorten and Mani stone walls and a nun monastery.
Cross the suspension bridge over Imja Khola and gradually climb to Pangboche to see the most beautiful mountain of Ama Dablam in the Everest region.
Trek to upstream closer to Imja River quite pleasant up toward Imja valley and fairly seen open to the confluence of the Lobuche River.
Explore Dingboche, the last Sherpa settlement, with the beautiful terraced field enclosed by a stone wall to avoid barley, buckwheat, and potatoes from the cold wind and grazing animals.
-
Day 8: Trek from Dingboche to Chhukung Ri
Walk through the Dingboche stone-walled fields and alpine landscape. Continue trek to the beautiful Imja valley and see Lhotse towers on your left and Ama Dablam on your right.
After 3 km of walk, the trail leads to the Bibre (4570 m), a yak herdsman place. Straight ahead, beyond a terminal moraine wall, see the most popular trekking Island peak (Imja Tse, 6189m). The Imja Tse looks awesome with its step rock and icy south face. The trail ahead is intersected by icy streams. About 30 min walk from Bibre, arrive at Chhukung.
After lunch, hike to the rocky knoll of Chhukung Ri at 5546m, which offers stunning views of Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Makalu, and several others, including Baruntse.
-
Day 9: Explore Chhukung Valley
A scheduled second rest day for better acclimatization in Chhukung is recommended before setting off for the pass. However, you are not supposed to stay inactive. The view from Chhukung Valley on the moraines towards Island Peak (6189 m) is tremendous.
Trek to the Island Peak base camp (4970 m) along the Lhotse glacier, passing the bloated water of Imja Lake. The great south face of Lhotse towers above north, Amphu Labtsa pass (5845 m), and the immense fluted ice walls dominate the horizon to the south. To the southwest, the eastern face of Ama Dablam provides an amazing view of the picturesque peak.
-
Day 10: Stroll across Chhukung Valley
Start from Chhukung to conquest the highest pass of the trip. Carry plenty of water, some snacks, and a packed lunch as there are no lodges on the way.
Enjoy the beautiful landscape of nature. You can select to go via any of the possible trails- either taking a climb over the hill northwest of Chhukung over the moraine of the Nuptse Glacier, or you might walk back down the valley to Bibre and follow a high trail above the Niyang Khola.
Experience incredible views of the Island peak valley and the jagged ridge of Amphu Lapcha. Ascending along the east side of Niyang Khola valley, turn west and walk through the sloppy stony trial and enter a wide basin dotted with small frozen lakes. The trail rises over loose scree gaining the Kongma La Pass, after five hours, we leave Chhukung.
Reach the top to see prayer flags and cairn. Behind is the landscape of icy lakes, ahead of which is the Khumbu Glacier.
The final descent is the most difficult trek stage by climbing the moraine on the far side, and the trail turns north through Khumbu Glacier to reach the Lobuche.
-
Day 11: Trek to Everest Base Camp
Travel through the windy and rocky paths with the crest of the north ridge to Everest along with Mt. Pumori, Mahalangur Himal, Khumbutse and Nuptse. The trail continues along the side of Khumbu Glacier to Gorakshep.
Check in to the hotel and have lunch.
In the afternoon, set out to visit the world’s highest Everest Base Camp. Base Camp has no view of Mt. Everest but a fantastic view of Khumbu Icefall and colourful camp site of Everest expedition during expedition season.
-
Day 12: Hike to Kalapatthar
The trail climbs 2/3 hrs up to Kala Patthar (5,550 m/18,207 ft) early in the morning to inspect the panoramic views of beautiful sunrise over Mt. Everest, Mt. Pumori, Mt. Lingtren, Khumbutse, Changtse, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Ama Dablam, and many more.
Trek down to Gorakshep and retrace down to Lobuche.
After lunch, the path to Dzongla branches off from the main trail some distance from Lobuche. After crossing a stream, come through a fork and later curving round to the wide gravelly river bed of the stream as it flows southwestward, the trail runs across it and climbs the ridge ahead to see the soaring heights of Ama Dablam and Kangtega, and Thamserku. The Pheriche village is also visible down in the distance. As the ridge veers northward, the vast Cho La Lake spreads below Mt. Cholatse. The lake stays over a long stretch until you descend to a wide basin.
The trail climbs up and descends steeply to another broad basin. After an hour's walk, transverse from the basin and shortly after crossing a wobbly bridge, reach Dzongla.
-
Day 13: Climb to Cho La Pass and Cho La Lake
Early morning get out of the lodge to see the mesmerizing sight of Cholatse looming over.
The trek begins from Dzongla and descends to a basin across which meanders a murmuring stream crusted with ice at places. In about an hour, you reach the top of the basin readying for the triumph on Cho La. As you gain height, the view gets increasingly captivating. The Cho La Lake begins to appear, and the Ama Dablam, in its pyramidal incarnation, presides over a range of mountains on the south as Cholatse soars on the west.
Climbing the incline is not easy, but it is steep, made worse by boulders over some of which you will have to scramble. You need to be alert as rocks can be glazed by ice. The final climb to the Cho La can be tricky as the trail curves round a crevasse.
Reach the top, see prayer flags strung across cairns, flapping in the strong wind and witness breathtaking scenery of majestic peaks in all directions. Although leading down to Thangnag can be easily made out from the pass because it is decent but can be hazardous if rocks are glazed by ice, a bit of cautiousness is needed.
Reach Thangnag, a rather more substantial hamlet with a small village. Step out of the settlement and see beautiful mountain views.
The trail brings to the Ngozumpa glacier edge after a short walk (longest glacier in Nepal). Head to the other side of the glacier and witness the second Gokyo Lake on the series of six lakes. A short distance away is the third Gokyo Lake. On the edge of this lake stands the Gokyo Village, where you finally give rest to your body.
-
Day 14: Rest and explore Gokyo Ri
Climb Gokyo Ri (5350 m), the small peak above the lake, to enjoy the best viewpoint of the Everest Region. The peak of 5350m is sometimes called Kala Pathar (not to be confused with the Kala Pathar above Gorakshep, though the view is similar).
The trail continues to the fourth and fifth lake to get mesmerized by the shimmering turquoise blue sheet of water.
Climb two hours to the top of the peak, providing a panoramic view of Cho Oyu, Gyachung King, Lhotse, Makalu, Cholatse, and Taboche.
Several small peaks in this region offer vantage points for the surrounding peaks and views of the Nangpa La, the old trade route into Tibet.
-
Day 15: Explore Ngozumpa Glacier and Gokyo Valley
Start the trail up to Marlung (4210m) after the conquest of Renjo La (5345m) as there is no alternative to Marlung for overnight.
Proceed downwards from the Gokyo Valley, leave the main trail, and turn to the Renjo La trail by Dudh Pokhari. Trek for 3 hours towards the Renjo La pass and see the beautiful scene of Everest, Lhotse, Cholatse, and Taboche shining in the sun. Views from Renjo La are much like that from Gokyo Ri, with third Gokyo Lake and Gokyo Village beneath the grey smear of Ngozumpa Glacier.
Trek down from the Pass through a stone staircase and move over loose scree to reach the south bank of a small lake, Angladumba Tsho. The presence of ice on the trail while descending can make the descent a bit hazardous. Along the way, see Relama Tsho and Renjo Lake.
Walk down a narrow valley clogged with giant boulders to Lumde, there is a support Lodge, but it can be closed often. Walk almost an hour from Lumle (4350m) to reach Marlung on the east bank of the Bhote Koshi.
-
Day 16: Stroll across Gumba region
Trek down from the Marulung, cross the Bhote Koshi River and descend to Taranga. The trail goes through the valley of Langmuche Khola. This stream drains down from Dig Tsho, the glacial lake that burst its banks in 1985, causing devastating floods along the Dudh Koshi Valley to moraine to Thame. Thame has a sprawling village with lodges and stunning mountains like Thamserku, Kangtega, and Kusum Kanguru. See beautiful Gumba village situated in some fields on a hill to the west. The colourful Mani Rimdu festival featuring colourful mask dances is held in Gumba in May.
Trek down after crossing a bridge and reach Samdo to see breathtaking views and head towards Thame village, which hosts a monastery called Khari Gumba, a nunnery home to some nuns and monks.
After passing through a check post, come to the world`s highest hydroelectric power station built with Austrian help. The project provides electricity to most parts of upper Khumbu. Reach a small village of Phortse where there is Lawudo monastery which is run by Kopan monastery of Boudhanath in Kathmandu and is popular among the westerners for Buddhist study and meditation center.
Reach Namche again through colourful prayer flags, Mani walls, and Chortens.
-
Day 17: Trek to Dudh Koshi
After breakfast, retrace the main trail down to Dudh Koshi to Namche and Khumbu Himalayas to National Park exit checkpoint Jorsalle.
The trail follows down steam of Dudh Koshi river retracing to Phakding.
