Seethawaka Wet Zone Botanic Garden Excursion
- Meet your tour guide and drive from Colombo for approximately an hour or slightly more to the Seethawaka Wet Zone Botanic Garden. The botanical garden can be accessed via the Puwakpitiya - Thummodara main road, and it is located adjacent to the Indikada Mukalana Forest Reserve in Avissawella.
- Arrive at the garden and begin your tour. The Seethawaka Wet Zone Botanic Garden in Avissawella, the latest addition to Sri Lanka's five botanical gardens, was opened to the public in the latter part of 2014. This wet zone botanical garden covers 79 acres (32 ha), and its climate is quite cool and temperate. Wet zone plants are well nourished thanks to a stream that flows through the garden. The gardens are planned to expand to 105 acres in the future.
- The main reason for opening the garden to the public is to offer a new experience for both local and foreign visitors. This botanical garden also serves to conserve endemic and threatened plants found in the Ratnapura - Sinharaja region. In addition, it acts as a conservation ground for wet lowland plants while promoting bamboo cultivation. Training programs for individuals involved in horticulture, as well as research opportunities for researchers and undergraduate students, are also carried out here.
- The stone-paved paths allow you to walk comfortably around the garden. Information maps and boards are available to help you follow the route. The garden is quite photogenic, and most trees have name boards, so you can learn while enjoying the scenery.
- According to visitor reviews, the most scenic part of the wet zone garden is the large lawn area with kumbuk trees and a small lake. It is an ideal place to enjoy some quiet time away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Visitors are requested not to pollute the garden.
