Make your way to the renowned Snake Temple, built in 1850 in memory of a Chinese monk who sheltered jungle snakes. Inside the temple, venomous pit vipers coil freely around the altars. The reptiles are supposedly made drowsy and harmless by incense smoke, but their venom is removed for safety.
Explore Kek Lok Si Temple, one of the largest Chinese Buddhist temple complexes in Southeast Asia. The complex contains many pagodas, prayer halls, and bell towers built in various styles. A bronze statue of the goddess of mercy, Guanyin, looks down from the hill above the pagoda.
Hop on the funicular railway and enjoy the beautiful route as you ascend to the peak of Penang Hill at 800 m. Disembark at the top for an incredible view of the surrounding islands and mainland.
When descending the hill, visit the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre and take a short lesson in crafting pewter. Learn 19th-century techniques for shaping the versatile metal into a simple pewter bowl using basic hand tools.
