Almourol Castle and Tomar's Templar Heritage
Meet your tour guide at your hotel at 8:30 AM and head out to explore the route of the Portuguese Templars.
Start your tour with a visit to Almourol Castle, an impressive medieval fortress located on a small rocky island in the middle of the Tagus River.
Continue to the Convent of Christ, a former Roman Catholic convent in Tomar. Originally a 12th-century Templar stronghold, when the order was dissolved in the 14th century, the Portuguese branch became the Knights of the Order of Christ, who later supported Portugal's maritime discoveries in the 15th century.
Visit the Church of St. John the Baptist, the main church of Tomar, and the Church of Santa Maria dos Olivais, both fine examples of Gothic architecture.
Overnight in Tomar.
