Johannesburg and Soweto Historical Tour

  • Pick up from common points at around 8 AM from hotels in the Johannesburg and Sandton area.

  • Next, drive past important houses of the city while heading towards Diepkloof. The wealthy residents of Soweto live in this extension of the former township. We will stop here for tourists to take pictures.

  • Move on to Johannesburg University, driving past Baragwanath Hospital and Maponya Mall, the biggest commercial center in Soweto.

  • Then, stop at Sisulu Square, the site where African freedom fighters were arrested in 1956. Here, we will also see the Freedom Charter Memorial.

  • After a brief snack and tea break, tour Soweto's community for 40 minutes, guided by a local.

  • Continue to Regina Mundi Church, the site where many young students were arrested for protesting against the introduction of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction in schools. We then drive by Winnie Mandela's house.

  • Next, see the house of Bishop Tutu on Vilakazi Street. We also see Nelson Mandela's home, which is now a National Museum.

  • To conclude the tour, visit the Hector Pieterson Museum.

  • The tourists will then be dropped off at the common points from where they were picked up.

Know before you go

  • We have about 50 million people in South Africa. The capital of the country is Pretoria. Our currency is Rand. South Africa has 9 provinces, and some of them are prominently known for malaria hotspots. One such area is the biggest park, Kruger. You will need to consult a medical practitioner before and after your visit there.

  • Our pick-up points are around hotels in Johannesburg City. Pick-ups start from 8 AM in the Sandton area and the northern parts of Johannesburg. The city of Johannesburg, including Soweto, has a population of about 8 million people. Many African freedom fighters used to stay here during the days of Apartheid rule in the country. Therefore, you get to see some of their houses, such as the Nelson Mandela House, which is now a museum, and also the Hector Pieterson Museum. You can also socialize with members of the local community while shopping and buying African woodcraft. We can take you to a local restaurant where you can eat traditional African food.

  • In Johannesburg city center, we could show you the highest building in Africa, the Carlton Centre, Gandhi Square, and the Apartheid Museum. You may also combine some of these trips to make a customized full-day tour.
