The itinerary

1
Day 01

Arrival in Mfuwe and First Sundowner Drive

  • Arrive at Mfuwe Airport, where you will be met personally by your Zambian guide and taken to your lodge or camp to relax and unpack.
  • If you arrive in the morning, you will head out together on an afternoon/night drive and meet the guide at tea time.
  • After a short briefing, you will be on your way.
  • Stop at a scenic spot for sundowners, where you can enjoy a gin and tonic with snacks while watching the gorgeous African sun go down before continuing on your night drive.
  • Return to your lodge or camp at around 19:30 / 20:00 at the latest, in good time for dinner.

Day 02

Birding in South Luangwa

  • On this first full day out, get to know each other better while your guide learns what types of birds interest you most. The guide will use checklists and review the bird species you want to see.
  • Stop at around 09:30 for a lovely tea, coffee, and cookies break by the river or in the bush.
  • At around 10:30 / 11:00, return to your lodge or camp so you can enjoy lunch and relax.
  • The afternoon/evening drive will begin after tea time at around 15:00. Your guide will meet you at your lodge or camp and make sure everyone is ready to leave at the same time. The afternoon/night drive is also delightful for birdwatching.
  • At 17:30, stop once again for a gin and tonic or another drink with snacks at sundown.
  • By 20:00 at the latest, you will be back in time for dinner.

Day 03

A Fun and Educational Day of Birding

  • This full day together will be both fun and educational. Your guide will share as many facts about birds as possible, and some of them are sure to surprise you.
  • At 09:30, enjoy your now-usual tea, coffee, and cookies break.
  • At 10:30 / 11:00, you will be back at your lodge or camp for lunch and a siesta.
  • Then, at 15:00, the afternoon/night drive begins.
  • At 17:30, another relaxing sundowner will take place at a different location.
  • By 20:00 at the latest, you will be back home in time for dinner.

Day 04

Your Questions and a Change of Lodge

This day will focus on what you want to see and the questions you have for your guide. The guide will try to answer all of them and delight you with stories from the bush.

  • At 09:30, enjoy your tea, coffee, and cookies break.
  • At 10:00, you will be back at your lodge or camp to pack and prepare to move to the next lodge after lunch.
  • After your meal, you will transfer to a different lodge to enjoy another side of the Luangwa Valley. You will have time to relax for a while before heading out again.
  • At 15:00, the usual afternoon/night drive begins.
  • At 17:30, another relaxing sundowner will take place - perhaps by the river while watching kingfishers.
  • By 20:00 at the latest, you will be back at your lodge for dinner.

Day 05

Optional Walking Safari and Evening Drive

  • Today, your guide offers you the chance to go on a walking safari. You will begin with a short drive, then leave the vehicle and continue on foot, accompanied by a scout from the Zambian Wildlife Authority.
  • At 09:30, enjoy the now-usual tea, coffee, and cookies break. The coffee/tea porter will carry all the necessary water and snacks. All you need to bring is a hat, sunscreen, binoculars, or a camera.
  • At 10:30 / 11:00, you will be back at your lodge or camp for lunch and a siesta.
  • At 15:00, you will set out for another afternoon/night drive.
  • By 17:30, it is time for sundowners.
  • At 20:00, it is dinner time.

Day 06

Optional Impact Safari or Cultural Visit

  • Today can be a regular day in the bush, or your guide can make it a little different.
  • Many children in the Mfuwe area have never been inside the park, even though it is right on their doorstep. You are offered an Impact Safari, during which guests can take 2 to 4 of these children out on drives with them. They may join you in the morning, in the afternoon, or both, giving them the extraordinary opportunity to take part in an activity usually reserved for tourists.
  • At 09:30, enjoy the now-usual tea, coffee, and cookies break.
  • At 10:30 / 11:00, you will be back at your lodge or camp for lunch and a siesta.
  • If you wish, your guide can pick you up at 12:30 for a 1 hour 30 minute village visit around Mfuwe, including local craft shops and schools.
  • At 15:00, the afternoon/night drive begins.
  • At 17:30, another relaxing sundowner will take place at a different location.
  • By 20:00 at the latest, you will be back home in time for dinner.

Day 07

Final Full Day of Birding and Sundowners

  • It is your last full day. By now, you will have shared plenty of stories, so you are encouraged to ask as many remaining questions as possible.
  • At 09:30, enjoy the now-usual tea, coffee, and cookies break.
  • At 10:30 / 11:00, you will be back at your lodge or camp for lunch and a siesta.
  • At 15:00, the afternoon/night drive begins.
  • At 17:30, another relaxing sundowner will take place.
  • By 20:00 at the latest, you will be back home for dinner.

Day 08

Departure from Mfuwe

  • Depending on your departure time, you may be able to enjoy one last morning game drive together. In all cases, it will have been a pleasure to meet you, and the guide hopes you will have had a fantastic time in Zambia. Your guide will personally take you to the airport.
